Özet
The rising politicization in Turkey in the 1960s brought along with it acts of political violence. Viokent acts increased even more in tje 1970s. Hundreds of people died as a result of these actions. The most destructive of these acts of violence are mass lynchings. The acts of lynching not only cause loss of life and property, but also increase the sense of separation in the places where the lynching took place and in the whole society. In that case, questions such as who organized these lynchings, how those who participated in the lynching defended themselves, and what attitude did the public authority take in the face of the lynching are waiting to be answered. In this study, the Konya incidents, which were one of the most prominent lynching attempts in the 1960s, were discussed. The events in Konya were brought under the spotlight through national and local newspapers, parliamentary meetings. It was observed that almost all the actors of the Turkish right had a share in the occurrence of the Konya events, and they presented these actions as a national reflex against the leftists who were foreign to the society and wanted to confuse the society. The lynching activists, who emphasized that they were provoked, on the one hand, tried to hide their actions due to the criminal acts that took place in the incidents, and on the other hand, they did not hesitate to defend the rightness of their actions in order to come to the fore both in the power struggles against the left and among themselves. Public authorities did not adopt a homogeneous stance in their response to the lynching act. While the centre-right AP government adopted a relatively tolerant attitude towards the lynching, the reaction of the bureaucracy and the judiciary was more harsh. After all, the analysis of the Konya events will help us to understand the dynamics of mass lynching attempts, which will be experienced many times over in Turkey.
