The evaluation of teachers' perceptions about multicultural education in terms of abroad experience variable

Özet

The purpose of the study is to define multicultural education perceptions of teachers who have abroad experience and who do not with Erasmus+ programs. The study group consists of 40 teachers who have abroad experience (n=20) and who do not (n=20). The participant teachers work in Duzce, Akcakoca. Descriptive analysis and content analysis, qualitative data analysis techniques, were used to analyze the data, collected with semi-structured interview form. Some of the research results are as following: the most used concepts for multiculturalism concept are race, ethnicity, culture, language, religion, giving different point of view, cultural richness, transfrontier interaction, empathy, tolerance-respect, overcoming prejudice, human rights-democratization etc. concerns about multicultural education are stated as teacher efficiencies, cultural erosion, biased manners of decision makers-practitioners etc. probable problems are also intolerance, prejudice, conflict of value judgement, racist attitude, political obstacles etc. most of the participants find themselves inadequate. The obstacles to implement multicultural education in Turkey are political and racist manners, social structure and prejudice etc. in order to overcome these obstacles education programs and laws should be organized. This training program should include nongovernmental organizations and media.
