Critical thinking as an integral outcome in translator and interpreter training
(New Bulgarian Univ Sofia, Bulgari, 2022) Kuleli, Mesut; Tuna, Didem
The aim of this study is to investigate the critical thinking attitudes of translator and interpreter candidates with a view to coming up with recommendations on curriculum development in Translation and Interpretation undergraduate studies. A "Critical Thinking Skills Scale" was administered to 354 translation and interpretation students from five universities in Turkey. Independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Scheffe test were used in data analysis. With the highest and lowest attitudes found for receptiveness and inquiry skills respectively, the total critical thinking attitudes of translator candidates are above the average. The class level of the students is inversely correlated with total scores for critical thinking attitudes, in addition to the flexibility and judiciousness subdimensions. Moreover, translator candidates of the Bulgarian language have the highest total scores for critical thinking attitudes as compared to those of English, French, Persian and German. The results show that innovative curricula involving related tasks and activities must be developed for translation and interpretation departments to enhance translator candidates' critical thinking skills, bearing in mind the very nature of the act of translation and interpretation.

Multilevel study of the higher education challenges caused by the migration crisis in Turkey
(Springer International Publishing Ag, 2019) Sekret, Iryna; Jansen, Darco
he study is aimed to analyse challenges of the higher education which have been caused by the migration crisis for a few last years in Turkey. As it is known the refugees that flow from Syria, Iraq and other war-affected countries have drastically transformed the European space in terms of culture, communication, policies in education and employment. The paper concerns the higher education system in Turkey which has become the largest refugee population country in the world. Using a multilevel approach, the paper scrutinises educational policies including the European Commission statements, policies issued by the Turkish government and Higher Education Council in Turkey, and provides an overview of the situation in education concerning the Syrian refugee’s children in camps and public schools. The special focus is on the current situation in higher educational establishments and the refugee’s impact on the teaching and learning processes. With this purpose the instructors from universities located in different parts of Turkey were invited to respond to a specially designed questionnaire for obtaining their insights on the problems and specifics of teaching refugees. Considering peculiar conditions of the refugees due to their sociocultural and educational background, the potential of MOOCs (massive open online courses) as an alternative means of providing access to education is under discussion. With this concern the experts’ opinion on MOOCs are analysed together with such pre-requisitions as the status of MOOCs in higher institutions in Turkey, ICT tools utilised by instructors in their teaching, attitudes towards MOOCs and applicability of online learning for the refugees’ education. The paper concludes with the recommendations on developing MOOCs for the learning purposes of refugees and ways of implementing online learning in their educational practices.

From face-to-face teaching to online tutoring: Challenges, solutions and perspectives
(Springer International Publishing Ag, 2019) Sekret, Iryna; Durmuş, Soner; Gürer, Melih Derya; Curaoğlu, Orhan
The chapter reports on the results of the case study related to the implementation of online tutoring in one of the state universities in Turkey. The research is a qualitative study based on the free interview of the focus group of online tutors and ICT experts on their experiences and problems they faced during their first year of online tutoring to the university students. The problems identified were grouped in four clusters (a) technical, (b) managerial, (c) instructional and (d) psychological. Based on the findings, a complex of solutions have been suggested and being implemented into practice in order to enhance the quality of online tutoring in the framework of the formal university education. The main purpose of the enhancements is to raise the online tutors’ competences in ICT tools for online tutoring purposes and to reformat their teaching experience from the face-to-face mode of teaching to the specifics of online tutoring and communication mediated by appropriate ICT tools. Considering the results of the study, we developed an outline of skills and competences required for an online tutor and formulated principles of effective online tutoring. The results of the case study imply that the online tutor’s competences should include the areas of the pedagogy and methodology of online tutoring, strategies of online instruction and managing appropriate ICT tools.

An investigation of the effectiveness of the modular general English language teaching preparatory program at a Turkish university
(Education Assoc South Africa, 2013) Coşkun, Abdullah
Evaluating existing foreign language programs on a regular basis is essential because program evaluation leads to more effective programs. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the modular intensive general English language teaching program applied at a university in Turkey by investigating students' and English instructors' perceptions of different program dimensions, such as the materials, teaching process, and assessment. The data were collected via questionnaires filled out by students and interviews with the English instructors at the preparatory program. The findings of the study show that the modular system should be discontinued as it has certain drawbacks and should be replaced by a more manageable and feasible system considering specific contextual constraints, such as the number of instructors, classrooms and teaching resources. Also, it was found that there are certain aspects of the curriculum that need to be improved in order to develop a more effective program. It is hoped that this study will lead to more evaluative studies in foreign language teaching programs.

Evaluating an english language teacher education program through peacock's model
(Social Science Press, 2010) Coşkun, Abdullah; Daloğlu, Ayşegül
The main aim of this study is to draw attention to the importance of program evaluation for teacher education programs and to reveal the pre-service English teacher education program components that are in need of improvement or maintenance both from teachers' and students' perspectives by using Peacock's (2009) recent evaluation model in a Turkish university context. The study is based on the data collected from teachers and fourth year student teachers who have had experience with the new teacher education program initiated by Higher Education Council (HEC) in 2006-2007 academic year. The data collected by means of questionnaires and interviews revealed that although participating teachers and student teachers have similar views about some program components, they hold different ideas about the balance among linguistic and pedagogic competences in the program. While teachers believe that the program does not suffice to improve student teachers' linguistic competence, student teachers think that the pedagogic side of the program needs to be improved.

Benefits of out-of-class speaking activities for EFL students
    (2016) Coşkun, Abdullah
The objective of the study is to investigate the benefits of out-of-class speaking activities for English as a Foreign (EFL) students. Twenty-one firstyear students in a state university in Turkey were encouraged to choose any out-of-class activities they would like to carry out for six weeks to improve their speaking skills. At the end of six weeks, they were given a survey of open-ended questions aiming to reveal the activities they selected and the perceived benefits of these activities. The chosen activities include the following: Fantasy Role-Playing, Continuous Story, Debate, Radio Program, Broadcasting on Periscope. As for the perceived benefits of these activities, nearly all the students indicated that their activities contributed to their fluency, vocabulary and pronunciation development as well as problem solving skills. Also, the activities were thought to be useful for their selfconfidence, critical thinking skills and for their general knowledge. Therefore, it can be recommended that out-of-class speaking activities should be incorporated into mainstream EFL programs.

A bibliometric analysis of lexical bundles usage in native and non-native academic writing
    (2020) Akbulut, Fatma Demiray
Over the last few decades, it has become obligatory to publish academic research to survive in academic world. In academic writing skill, lexical bundles (LBs) usage is marked as a master ability to build well-organized paragraphs or essays and are essential instruments to sound more natural and be fluent in English. The current study aimed to search the usage of LBs by non-native and native English academic writers and comparing the profiles of LBs in terms of the function, structure, and frequency. A corpus of 257 articles written by native and non-native academic writers was organized and multi-word LBs were identified using AntConc 3.2.4w. Written texts are collected from Journal of Language and Linguistic Studies (JLLS) by non-native speakers (NNSs) and Linguistics and Education Journal (LINGED) by native speakers (NSs). The findings suggest that non-native writers generally use more lexical bundles but fall into more repetitions. Besides, there are some substantial differences in the frequencies of structural and functional usage of LBs. In structural category, NNSs used Noun Phrase (NP) and Prepositional Phrase (PP)-based LBs and Conjunction at a lower rate, and Verb Phrase (VP) and Clause-based LBs at a higher rate than NSs. In terms of functional category, research-oriented LBs are more frequently used by NSs while text and stance-oriented LBs are more frequently used by NNSs. As a conclusion, it is stated that, the lexico-grammatical difference between two languages and the NNSs’ tendency to write resultoriented article revealed distinct features of LB usage. © 2020 JLLS and the Authors - Published by JLLS.

Effects of morphological awareness on second language vocabulary knowledge
    (2017) Akbulut, Fatma Demiray
This research has analysed the impact of morphological treatment in English morphological awareness task. The main aim of this study is to understand the relationship between morphological awareness and vocabulary knowledge of university preparatory class students. In second language learning environment, fifty-two preparatory class students have participated in this study. The participants have been divided into two groups as experimental and control group. Experimental group was conducted three hours of morphological guideline and morpheme teaching treatment during twelve weeks whereas control group was exposed to traditional vocabulary teaching. To explore the effects of morphological treatment on English vocabulary acknowledgement, all participants completed Nation’s Vocabulary Size Test (2001), language history questionnaire and Morphological Awareness Test (Part A and B). The relationship between the pre-tests and post-tests results has shown that experimental group acquired higher score on vocabulary recognition than control group after thirty-six-hours treatment. These findings indicate that the participants who obtained morphological treatment took in consideration the morphemes and vocabulary items better than the others who took traditional vocabulary teaching procedure.

Improving Turkish EFL learners’ lexical knowledge through topic interest-based reading
    (2020) Akbulut, Fatma Demiray
Vocabulary acquisition in terms of lexical knowledge is one of the basic elements of second language acquisition. Interesting reading studies presented in the classroom positively affects the learners’ acquisition of new words. In this context, this study aims to demonstrate that Turkish EFL learners have a positive effect on the vocabulary knowledge by the help of topic interest-based reading passages. This study carried out experimentally in the context of pre-test and post-test was conducted with 52 Turkish EFL learners who were divided into two groups as experimental and control. While the experimental group was exposed to reading components for 12 weeks, the control group was trained with traditional reading passages. According to the results, vocabulary knowledge of the students exposed to topic interest-based reading passages increased significantly when they were compared to the control group. Consequently, interesting reading activities increase vocabulary knowledge of the students incidentally.

A Bourdieusian perspective on the translation of the life and opinions of Tristram Shandy, gentleman from English into Turkish
    (2018) Erguvan, Mehmet
In the last three decades, interest in sociology has picked up great momentum in Translation Stud- ies and increasing attention has been paid to the social factors that surround an act of translation. Sociologically-oriented research in Translation Studies has enabled the identification of the relation- ships between the external conditions of a text’s creation and the narrower steps of the translation process. So far, translation scholars who have attempted to explore sociological approaches in Trans- lation Studies have often benefited from Bourdieu’s thinking. Through its involvement of different levels of analysis, Bourdieu’s perspective helps researchers discover different aspects of cultural practice, in this study, the book translation. These aspects range “from the relationship between the cultural field and the broader field of power to strategies, trajectories and works of individual agents” (Bourdieu, 1993, p.16). As Bourdieu (1993) suggests, in order to fully comprehend a given cultural work, due attention needs to be paid to all levels of analysis, each consisting of various components. In this light, this study aims at concentrating on text structures in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman and translation strategies in its Turkish translation on the one hand, and, on the other, it focuses on the phenomena of translation beyond a textual level. Combining these two lev- els through Bourdieu’s theory of cultural production, this study entails a comprehensive translation analysis by employing Bourdieu’s key concepts. As a result of the aforementioned discussion, this study concludes that, macro translational choices and strategies in the Turkish translation of Tristram Shandy are not reflected on the translation strategies at a micro level as expected. Ultimately, the translator’s choices including (i) the use of notes/footnotes, (ii) the use of Ottoman Turkish, and (iii) the use of explicitation in the Turkish version of Tristram Shandy seem to fail to fulfill the expectations of “serious literature” readers, which are structured by the field of restricted cultural production and, which largely differentiate from the expectations of “popular literature” readers.

Lexical access models durıing language selectivity in bilingual speech production
    (2014) Akbulut, Fatma Demiray
