Özet
The study is carried out on 123 patients with malignant (n=73) or benign (n=50) breastcnc cancers referred to Ankara Numune Teaching and Research Hospital during three years of study period. By comparing the results of mammography and/or ultrasonography reports with the histopathology reports; the reliability of mammography and ultrasonography on the diagnosis of breast cancers is assessed. In the diagnosis of breast cancers the efficiency, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of mammography were 86.1%, 86.8%, 84.4%, 92.2%, and 75.6% respectively, whereas the corresponding figures for ultrasonography were recorded as 90.3%, 90.8%, 89.6%, 92.2%, and 87.7%. When these two methods were used in combination the corresponding values rose to 94.7%, 94.1%, 96.4%, 91.4 %, and 94.5% respectively. In this study despite the fact that the statistical figures demonstrated that the diagnostic value of ultrasonography are higher than that of mammography, when the advantages and disadvantages of both methods are considered, it is concluded that these two methods should definitely be used together for the diagnosis of breast tumors.
