Özet
Purpose: This study was done to determine the physical fitness levels of wheelchair basketball players. We also aimed to constitute an assessment form for physiotherapists, trainers and other health care assistants. Material and methods: Sixty sportsmen participated in the study. Sportsmen were divided into two groups according to the points they got from IWBF classification system. We evaluated their body composition, upper extremity isometric muscle strengths, hand grip strengths, audio and visual simple reaction times, speed and cardiovascular endurance levels. Results: We could not find a statistical difference between two groups in their sport years, years with disability, training hours, injury percentages, fat percentage, fat weights, lean body mass, grip strengths, right elbow extension, both hands extension and flexion muscle strengths, audio and visual reaction time and speed (p>0.05). We found statistical differences in terms of right and left shoulder flexion, abduction, elbow fiexion, left elbow extension muscle strength tests and cardiovascular endurance levels in favor of higher controlled trunk players (p<0.05). There were positive correlations among weekly training hours and speed, lean body mass, being a player in national team, being injured previously (p<0.05). Conclusion: In the direction of our data we suggest that wheelchair basketball players' physical fitness levels should be evaluated and an individual training program should be planned for each player according to their assessment results.
