Clinical significance of palmomental reflex

The palmomental reflex which can be described as involuntary contraction of m. mentalis caused by stimulation of the thenar eminence, can be tested easily. Although its presence may alert the clinician to the possibility of cerebral pathology, it may exist in normal people and absent in disease states. Strong, sustained, and easily repeatable reflex is more likely to indicate cerebral damage.
