To identify the effects of amyloride and procaine in retinal expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP 70) following traumatic injury. Methods: We induced traumatic stress by performing experimental spinal injury in 36 male Wistar-albino rats. We randomised the animals into three groups. Group I received no medications, Group II received intraperitoneal (IP) Procaine 15mg/kg, Group III received Amyloride 30 mg/kg IP. We sacrificed half of the animals in each groups at 12th hour and the remaining half in 24 hours. Following immidiate enucleation we isolated the retinae and detected HSP 70 immunoreactivity in each group. Results: There was moderate expression of HSP 70 in the outer nuclear and inner plexiform layer of the retinae after 12 hours and marked staining with HSP 70 antibodies 24 hours after the injury in all subjects which did not receive any medication. There was little or no immunoreaction to HSP 70 in rat retinae which received procaine or amyloride. Conclusion: Decreased expression of HSP 70 in the retina by procaine and amyloride indicates their neuroprotective role following traumatic stress.
