Background : Hyperuricemia is a common finding in elderly people and more attention should be paid to the close relationship between hyperuricemia and hypcnipidemia. Aim : The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between serum uric acid and lipid profile in eiderly subjects. Material and Methods : This study was performed to compare serum lipid levels elderly normouricemic subjects (controls, n=48, 25 male, 71.75 +/- 5.00 years) and in elderly hyperuricemic subjects (n = 42, 18 male, 72.19 +/- 5.08 years). Results : Serum total cholesterol (respectively, 202 +/- 40 mg/dl 173 +/- 36 mg/dl, p=0.0001), triglycerides (respectively, 130 +/- 51 mg/dl, 100 +/- 38 mg/dl, p=0.002) and LDL-cholesterol levels (respectively, 137 +/- 32 mg/dl, 106 +/- 26 mg/dl, p=0.001), were significantly higher and HDL-cholesterol level (respectively, 39 +/- 9 mg/dl, 46 +/- 13 mg/dl, p-0.008), was significantly lower in elderly subjects with hyperuricemia compared to hyperuricemia group. Conclusion : Hyperuricema is associated with hyperlipidemia in elderly patients.en_US
