In this article, how ‘shadow’ in a semantic and figural manner is used in the paintings produced in different periods of time has been explained. The paintings of the primitive humans demonstrate parallelism with the knowledge of nature. An epic discourse has emerged from the cultural aspect. It has been said that the soul and shadow coalesce into each other in primitive humans and the shadow is a living component of the body. In the cave painting, the shadow had been used as a tool of contour drawing tool. A realistic, view-oriented drawing of an object and its shadow has become possible after the discovery of perspective. The shadow represents uncanny and dreadful emotions in the paintings and movies. SinceRenaissance , the western painting style has been using the shadow as a symbol of authenticity. According to the retinal and mimetic understanding of art, a shadow adds a three-dimensional perspective into an objective. A shadow has been used in the paintings as a psychological tool that demonstrates the negative aspects of the painter and an indicator that portray the sorrow of the life. While modernism is seeking for the truth of the knowledge instead of the truth of eye, the shadows in the painting are painted from the eye of the mind. Post-modernism is a time that the shadow is conceptualized in the painting and deracinated from its meanings coming from the past, even reduced to emptiness
