The relationship between obesity and demographic characteristics, severity of disease and atopy in asthma patients

Aim: In this study we aimed to evaluate the relationship between obesity and gender, age, education status, atopy and severity of disease in asthma patients. Materials and method: Two hundred and sixty one patients diagnosed as asthma in our chest diseases clinic were enrolled in this study, and their BMI (kg/m2) were analyzed. Results: The mean age of asthmatic patients (195 female, 66 male) was 48.4 +/- 16.2 years. Frequency of obesity in female asthmatics was higher than in male asthmatics (in females 44%, in males 23%; p<0.05). In female asthmatics older than 50 years, and in those whose education level was primary school or lower, frequency of obesity was higher (p<0.001). There was no relationship between obesity and atopy (p>0.05). Severity of disease was found to be correlated with the increase in the frequency of obesity (p<0.001). Also in all patients there was a linear relationship in spearman correlation between BMI and asthma severity (r=0.326, p<0.001) and age (r=0.361, p<0.001). A negative correlation between BMI and FVC value (r=-0.325, p<0.001) was detected. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, risk factors for obesity were found to be as follows: female asthmatics older than 50 years [odds ratio (OR)=2.2, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.2-4.0], education level of primary school or lower (OR=2.8, 95% CI=1.4-5.5), moderate persistent asthma (OR=5.1, 95% CI=1.3-19.4), and severe persistent asthma (OR=5.1, 95% CI=1.3-21.6). Conclusion: In this study, frequency of obesity in female asthmatics was higher in patients with lower educational level and in patients older than 50 years. Severity of disease correlated with frequency of obesity. The causative relation between obesity and severity of asthma needs to be clarified with new and more detailed studies.
