Öğe Measurement invariance of the Facebook intrusion questionnaire across 25 countries(John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2024) Blachnio, Agata; Przepiorka, Aneta; Gorbaniuk, Oleg; Abreu, Ana Maria; Bendayan, Rebecca; Durak, Mithat; Durak, Emre ŞenolFacebook is one of the most popular social networking sites. However, Facebook intrusion or addiction is a growing concern as it involves an excessive attachment to Facebook, which disrupts daily functioning. To date, few studies have examined whether cross-cultural differences in the measurement of Facebook addiction exist. The aim of this study was to investigate the cross-cultural validity and measurement invariance of the Facebook Intrusion Questionnaire (FIQ), one of the most widely used measures of Facebook addiction, across 25 countries (N = 12,204, 62.3% female; mean age = 25 years). Multigroup confirmatory factor analyses (MGCFA) assessed cross-cultural validity as well as invariance. Additionally, individual confirmatory factor analyses evaluated the factorial structure and measurement invariance across genders in each country. The FIQ demonstrated partial metric invariance across countries and metric (13 countries), scalar (11 countries) or residual (10 countries) invariance across genders within individual countries. A one-factor model indicated a good fit in 18 countries. Cronbach's alpha for the entire sample was .85. Our findings suggest that the FIQ may provide an adequate assessment of Facebook addiction that is psychometrically equivalent across cultures. Moreover, the questionnaire seems to be universal and suitable for studying different social media in distinct cultural environments. Consequently, this robust tool can be used to explore behaviours related to specific media that are particularly popular in any given country.Öğe Influence of perceived social support on forgiveness in university students: Examining the mediator role of cognitive flexibility and moderator role of gender(Cyprus Mental Health Inst, 2023) Pehlivan, Neslihan Nur; Coşkun, HamitThe current literature needs to include studies examining the path from social support to forgiveness. This study aimed to examine cognitive flexibility as a mediator between social support and forgiveness in university students and gender as a moderator of this pathway. Data were collected through online by a sample of 243 students, 204 (84%) female and 39 (16%) male, chosen by a convenient sampling method and voluntarily filled in the scales. Cognitive flexibility was found to be a significant mediator in bootstrapped tests of indirect effects, and this mediation effect was moderated by gender. In the relationship between social support and forgiveness, male participants forgive more as their perceived social support increases; female participants forgive more regardless of their perceived social support level. In light of the literature, these findings were addressed.Öğe Predictors of subjective health among spouses and its relations with happiness: A multilevel analysis in a nationwide survey in Turkey(Springer, 2024) Tosyalı, Furkan; Tosyalı, Ezgi Çoban; Harma, MehmetThe current study aims to examine predictors of subjective health, including its relation with happiness, at the individual and family levels. For this purpose, we analyzed data collected from spouses representing each family (9,634 families, N = 19,268). A multilevel analysis was conducted to examine both individual- and family-level variables associated with subjective health evaluations. Individual-level variables were gender, age, education, employment, presence of chronic illness, smoking, alcohol use, and individual happiness. Family-level variables were socioeconomic status, number of children, household size, length of the marriage (in a year), presence of an elderly person who needs care in the household, presence of a disabled person who needs care in the household, and family happiness. The results showed that subjective health is enhanced by being man, younger, employed, highly educated, free from chronic illness, and experiencing greater levels of happiness at the individual level. In addition, poorer subjective health is associated with caring for an elderly or disabled family member and having a higher number of children in the household at the family level. However, individuals had better subjective health at the family level when socioeconomic status was higher, greater family happiness, and greater household size existed. The current study is important since research that simultaneously considers individual- and family-level happiness has been scarce in the literature. Thus, the findings would enhance the current understanding of the link between happiness and health.Öğe Editorial: Post-traumatic growth(Frontiers Media Sa, 2023) Durak, Emre Şenol; Di Tella, Marialaura; Romeo, AnnunziataStudies on traumatic events have mainly focused on their unfavorable effects, like posttraumatic stress disorder. On the other hand, traumatic encounters that shatter people’s presumptions can result in positive experiences.Öğe A dyadic perspective on the role of need satisfaction in the relationship between perceived partner responsiveness and sleep quality(Springer, 2024) Tosyalı, Ezgi Çoban; Bozo, ÖzlemThe main purpose of this study is to examine how perceived partner responsiveness (PPR), need satisfaction and sleep quality are related in romantic relationships. Data were collected from a sample of 119 heterosexual romantic partners (M-age = 32.1, 20 to 63 years-old) who were together for 5.7 years on average. The proposed model was analyzed using actor-partner interdependence model to examine the mediating role of need satisfaction on the link between PPR and sleep quality. Results indicated no direct paths from PPR to sleep quality. Significant actor effects of PPR on need satisfaction were found for both genders. Similarly, significant actor effects and women's partner effect of need satisfaction were established on sleep quality. Additionally, results yielded two significant indirect effects: Women's reports of higher PPR were linked to better sleep quality of both women and men, only in case of high need satisfaction reported by women. Findings contributed to the existing literature by presenting an alternative approach to examine PPR and sleep in a dyadic perspective through the role of need satisfaction while highlighting women's influence on men's sleep.Öğe A new paradigm of ostracism: The effect of ostracism on creativity, manipulated by using a new paradigm(Hogrefe AG-Hogrefe AG Suisse, 2023) Abayhan, Yasemin; Güzel, Hayal Yavuz; Coşkun, Hamit; Tuna, Ayşe; Sevinçli, Mehmet Can; Erdem, EsraA New Paradigm of Ostracism: The Effect of Ostracism on Creativity, Manipulated by Using a New ParadigmÖğe Lonely online: A social model of digital media addiction: A study in 21 countries(Akademiai Kiado Zrt, 2023) Blachnio, Agata; Przepiorka, Aneta; Gorbaniuk, Oleg; Mcneill, Monika; Bendayan, Rebecca; Durak, MithatMeeting AbstractÖğe Neuroprotective effects of goji berry (Lycium barbarum L.) polysaccharides on depression-like behavior in ovariectomized rats: Behavioral and biochemical evidence(Medicinska Naklada, 2023) Soytürk, Hayriye; Bozat, Bihter Gökçe; Karakaş, Fatma Pehlivan; Coşkun, Hamit; Fırat, TülinAim To assess the protective effects of goji berry (Lycium barbarum L.) polysaccharides (LBP) on depression-like behavior in ovariectomized rats and to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these effects. Methods One hundred female Wistar albino rats (three months old) were randomly assigned either to ovariectomy (n = 50) or sham surgery (n = 50). After a 14-day recovery period, the groups were divided into five treatment subgroups (10 per group): high-dose LBP (200 mg/kg), low-dose LBP (20 mg/kg), imipramine (IMP, 2.5 mg/kg), 17 beta estradiol (E2, 1 mg/kg), and distilled water. Then, rats underwent a forced swimming test. We also determined the levels of serum antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and malondialdehyde), E2 levels, hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), 5HT2A receptor, and transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL)-positive cells. Results Both low-dose LBP and imipramine decreased depression-like behavior by increasing serum superoxide dismutase activity and by decreasing serum malondialdehyde level. Furthermore, low-dose LPB, high-dose LBP, and imipramine increased the number of 5-HT2A receptor-and BDNF-positive cells but decreased the number of TUNELpositive cells in the hippocampus. Conclusion This is the first study to show the antidepressant effect of LBP. Although additional research is needed, LBP may be considered a potential new antidepressant.Öğe Psychological distress and anxiety among housewives: The mediational role of perceived stress, loneliness, and housewife burnout(Springer, 2023) Durak, Mithat; Durak, Emre Şenol; Karaköse, SelinHousewives are experiencing chronic stress when dealing with multiple roles (cooking, shopping, tidying the house) in their daily life. Although earlier studies have documented a significant link between role overload and stress-psychological well-being in the workplace, few studies have been conducted among housewives despite their high anxiety and burnout reports. The diathesis-stress model and transactional model of stress indicate that there may be somecontributory factors related to mental health. Within these frameworks, this research aimed to examine housewives' psychological distress and anxiety by focusing on three contributory factors namely housewife burnout, perceived stress, and loneliness. The present study was a novel contribution to the literature investigating the mediating roles of those three contributory factors between psychological distress and anxiety among housewives. Participants were 500 volunteer housewives between the ages of 20 and 70 from Turkey. In addition to Demographic Information Form, The Perceived Stress Scales (PSS-10), The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), The UCLA Loneliness Scale-Version 3 (UCLA LS3), The Housewives Burnout Questionnaire (CUBAC), and The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were used. Results showed that there were four paths between psychological distress and anxiety in the model, explaining 31.19% of the total variance in anxiety in housewives. The relationship between psychological distress and anxiety was mediated by perceived distress, loneliness, and housewife burnout. Specifically, the higher psychological distress and higher anxiety relationship were associated with higher perceived distress, higher loneliness, and higher housewife burnout. The findings provide beneficial insight for clinicians to prioritize the abandonment of the cope with loneliness, perceived stress, and burnout while working with housewives having psychological distress and anxiety.Öğe Self-control and digital media addiction: The mediating role of media multitasking and time style(Dove Medical Press Ltd, 2023) Błachnio, Agata; Przepiorka, Aneta; Cudo, Andrzej; Angeluci, Alan; Ezra, Menachem Ben; Durak, Mithat; Durak, Emre ŞenolIntroduction: As being an initiating actions and resisting short-term temptations, self-control is negatively related to digital media addiction. However, many studies indicate that there are variables that may mediate this relationship. The present study investigated the mediating role of media multitasking and time style in the relationship between self-control and digital media addiction. Methods: The study included N= 2193 participants with a mean age of M = 23.26 (SD = 6.98) from seven countries: Brazil, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Poland, Turkey, and the United States. The authors used the Brief Self-Control Scale, the Media Multitasking Scale, the Time Styles Scale, the Problematic Smartphone Use Scale, the Problematic Internet Use Scale, and the Problematic Facebook Use Scale. Results: Results revealed that self-control was negatively related to all assessed types of problematic digital media use, namely problematic Internet use, problematic smartphone use, and problematic Facebook use. Media multitasking was found to be a significant mediator of the relationship between self-control and problematic digital media use.Discussion: High self-control can be preventative against uncontrolled and automatic social media checking, whereas low self-control fosters the habit of continuously remaining current.Öğe Proximal and distal honor fit and subjective well-being in the Mediterranean region(Wiley, 2023) Hausler, Alexander Kirchner; Schoenbrodt, Felix D.; Üskül, Ayşe K.; Vignoles, Vivian L.; Bailon, Rosa Rodriguez; Yalçın, Meral GeziciObjectivePeople's psychological tendencies are attuned to their sociocultural context and culture-specific ways of being, feeling, and thinking are believed to assist individuals in successfully navigating their environment. Supporting this idea, a stronger fit with one's cultural environment has often been linked to positive psychological outcomes. The current research expands the cultural, conceptual, and methodological space of cultural fit research by exploring the link between well-being and honor, a central driver of social behavior in the Mediterranean region. MethodDrawing on a multi-national sample from eight countries circum-Mediterranean (N = 2257), we examined the relationship between cultural fit in honor and well-being at the distal level (fit with one's perceived society) using response surface analysis (RSA) and at the proximal level (fit with one's university gender group) using profile analysis. ResultsWe found positive links between fit and well-being in both distal (for some, but not all, honor facets) and proximal fit analyses (across all honor facets). Furthermore, most fit effects in the RSA were complemented with positive level effects of the predictors, with higher average honor levels predicting higher well-being. ConclusionsOur findings highlight the interplay between individual and environmental factors in honor as well as the important role honor plays in well-being in the Mediterranean region.Öğe Neither Eastern nor Western: Patterns of independence and interdependence in Mediterranean societies(American Psychological Association, 2023) Üskül, Ayşe K.; Hausler, Alexander Kirchner; Vignoles, Vivian L.; Bailon, Rosa Rodriguez; Castillo, Vanessa A.; Yalçın, Meral GeziciSocial science research has highlighted honor as a central value driving social behavior in Mediterranean societies, which requires individuals to develop and protect a sense of their personal self-worth and their social reputation, through assertiveness, competitiveness, and retaliation in the face of threats. We predicted that members of Mediterranean societies may exhibit a distinctive combination of independent and interdependent social orientation, self-construal, and cognitive style, compared to more commonly studied East Asian and Anglo-Western cultural groups. We compared participants from eight Mediterranean societies (Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus [Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities], Lebanon, Egypt) to participants from East Asian (Korea, Japan) and Anglo-Western (the United Kingdom, the United States) societies, using six implicit social orientation indicators, an eight-dimensional self-construal scale, and four cognitive style indicators. Compared with both East Asian and Anglo-Western samples, samples from Mediterranean societies distinctively emphasized several forms of independence (relative intensity of disengaging [vs. engaging] emotions, happiness based on disengaging [vs. engaging] emotions, dispositional [vs. situational] attribution style, self-construal as different from others, self-directed, self-reliant, self-expressive, and consistent) and interdependence (closeness to in-group [vs. out-group] members, self-construal as connected and committed to close others). Our findings extend previous insights into patterns of cultural orientation beyond commonly examined East-West comparisons to an understudied world region.Öğe Do De Bono?s green hat and green-red combination increase creativity in brainstorming on individuals and dyads?(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2022) Göçmen, Öznur; Coşkun, HamitHow de Bono's hats affect creativity is an interesting research question. Recent research indicates that the green hat enhances creativity more than the emotional red hat. However, the underlying mechanism of this increase is not yet known since the sample size was small in the previous study. It is also not known what effects the combinations of these hats are on creativity in the groups or dyads. For these purposes, two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, in individuals, the green hat increased creativity more than the red one by increasing flexibility. In Experiment 2, the pairs were randomly formed as the green-green, red-red, green-red hat ones. The green-red hat dyads were more creative than the red-red hat ones. These findings indicate the beneficial effect of the combination that dictates creativity and emotionality. These findings were discussed in terms of the cognitive stimulation approach.Öğe The mediating role of adolescent emotion regulation in the relationship between parental marital conflict resolution styles and adolescent conflict resolution behaviors(Hacettepe Univ, 2022) Bozyiğit, Tuğba; Mamatoğlu, NihalThe purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between parents' marriage conflict resolution styles and the adolescent conflict resolution behaviors, and to test the mediator role of the adolescent emotional regulation in this relationship. The study sample consisted of 186 students aged between 11 and 14 who were educated in secondary schools attached to the Ministry of National Education and their parents. "Conflict Resolution Styles Scale" for parents, "Conflict Resolution Behavior Scale" for adolescents and "Emotion Regulation Scale for Adolescents" were used for collecting data in the present study. The research findings show that there are significant relationships between some subscales of parent marriage conflict resolution styles and adolescent conflict resolution behaviors. According to this, the positive conflict resolution style of the mother is significantly related to the problem solving behavior of the adolescent, and the negative conflict resolution style of the mother is significantly related to the aggression behavior of the adolescent. On the other hand, the father's submissive conflict resolution style was found to be significantly correlated to the adolescent aggression behavior. Further, it has been found that internal functional emotion regulation has a partial mediating role and external dysfunctional emotion regulation has a fully mediating role in the relationship between mothers' negative marriage conflict resolution style and adolescent aggression behavior.Öğe Decision-making under stress: Executive functions, analytical intelligence, somatic markers, and personality traits in young adults(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Yılmaz, Selin; Kafadar, HaticeThe main goal of the study was to scrutinize mediating and moderating mechanisms identified in line with the predictions of Somatic Marker Hypothesis (SMH) and Dual Process Theory of the effect of acute stress on decision making. The sample group of the research comprised of 61 (31 females, 30 males) healthy university students aged between 18 and 23 (x = 21, SD = 1.28). Data measurement tools were Skin Conductance Response Measurement, Iowa Gambling Test, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Wechsler Memory Scale-III Spatial Span Subtest, Stroop Test TBAG Form, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Matrix Reasoning Subtest, Stress Rating Scale, The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Big Five Personality Traits Scale, Ways of Coping Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory. The findings indicated that acute stress gives rise to decision-making failures by suppressing the SCR emphasized in SMH and mental processes defined in System 2. Furthermore, neuroticism had a moderating role in the relationship between stress and decision-making. Accordingly, the abovementioned theories cannot separately be sufficient to explain decision-making under stress; but, the predictions of these theories can complement each other to thoroughly make out the physiological and cognitive mechanisms of decision-making.Öğe Altered meanings of home before and during COVID-19 pandemic(Springernature, 2022) Yalçın, Meral Gezici; Düzen, N. EkremHome came into focus immediately upon learning that COVID-19 is highly contagious and spread by human contact. Precautions people can take to safeguard themselves included physical distancing, social isolation, and staying at home. Despite phases of loosening or tightening precautions in most parts of the world, home retained its safe space status, almost irrespective of geographical location. Recent studies have shown that safety, security, and familiarity are the most referred positive attributes of home. Challenging this attenuation by scholars, negative or mixed meanings of home were highlighted in literary work and critics. Based on our integrative perspective bringing scientific and literary work together, we argue that pandemic might lead to changes in the meaning of home both in positive and negative directions simultaneously, inducing an ambiguous experience or even engendering a situated ambivalence. In this regard, we retrospectively inquired about the changes in home's meaning in its social, personal, and symbolic attributes. A data set of 66 participants from 15 cities in Turkey revealed that there are not only alterations in the existing connotations of home but also additional ones, in positive, negative, and both directions. Results obtained in the pandemic context were discussed in the light of home studies through a constructionist perspective.Öğe Editorial: Late-life psychopathology(Frontiers Media SA, 2023) Durak, Mithat; Karaköse, Selin; Yow, W. QuinThe Research Topic, “Late-life psychopathology,” concerns how psychopathology might present itself in old age. The collection includes a broad spectrum of older individuals’ behavioral, cognitive, and emotional issues, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, sexual disorders, insomnia, and personality disorders. Along with the psychopathological disorders in older adults, this Research Topic focused on the psychopathological similarities and differences across the various age groupsÖğe Country indicators moderating the relationship between phubbing and psychological distress: A study in 20 countries(Frontiers Media SA, 2021) Błachnio, Agata; Przepiórka, Aneta; Gorbaniuk, Oleg; McNeill, Monika; Bendayan, Rebecca; Durak, Mithat; Durak, Emre ŞenolProblematic mobile phone use can be related to negative mental states. Some studies indicate that behavioural dependency is related to variables associated with the country of origin. The aim of our study was to investigate if country indicators moderated the relationship between phubbing and psychological distress. Our sample consisted of 7,315 individuals from 20 countries, who completed the Phubbing Scale and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6). The analyses also included country indicators: the Gender Gap Index (GGI), the Human Development Index (HDI), the Social Progress Index (SPI), Hofstede's dimensions of culture, and the World Happiness Index (WHI). Our results showed that psychological distress was related to at least one dimension of phubbing (i.e., to communication disturbance or phone obsession) in all countries, which means this relationship is culturally universal. The results of the study demonstrate the importance of testing measurement invariance to determine what type of analysis and what type of conclusion are valid in a given study or comparison. Moreover, the increasing or decreasing correlation between phubbing and distress is related to some culture-level indices.Öğe Job satisfaction, and burnout as mediators of trait anger, work stress, positive and negative affect in a sample of Turkish correctional officers(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2021) Durak, Emre Şenol; Durak, Mithat; Gencöz, TülinStudies testing the Person-Environment Fit Theory and the top-down approach in the subjective well-being literature have highlighted a gap in the effect of personal fit variables or traits and their relationships with environmental variables. The current study aims to examine the role of trait anger, stress, and burn-out on job satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect within the framework of Person-Environment Fit Theory and the top-down approach by using structural equation modeling. The study was conducted on 588 Turkish correctional officers working in low-, medium-, or maximum-security prisons. Similar to previous findings, a direct positive relationship was found between trait anger and negative affect. Similarly, work stress, burnout, and job satisfaction were positively and directly associated with each other. Besides, the mediating role of burnout and job satisfaction in the relationship among trait anger, work stress, and negative affect/positive affect was statistically significant. Moreover, the relationship between trait anger and negative affect/positive affect, as well as the relationship between work stress and positive affect, was mediated by burnout, while job satisfaction only mediated the relationship between work stress and positive affect. Implications are presented to improve the subjective well-being of correctional officers.Öğe Health beliefs in association with behaviors in compliance with COVID-19 public health guidelines: A cross-sectional study(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2022) Can, Fatma; Topçu, Aysun Ergül; Topçu, GökhanThis study investigated the preventive health behaviors against the COVID-19 outbreak in Turkey according to the health belief model. The relationships between perceived susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers, and preventive health behaviors were examined. 1401 participants consisting of 992 (70.8%) females and 409 (29.3%) males participated in an online survey. Independent groups t-test, hierarchical regression analysis and Process Macro were used for analyses. The findings showed that women perceived higher levels of severity of the disease and the benefits of preventive health behaviors than men. Men perceived more barriers to preventive health behaviors. The levels of anxiety and preventive health behaviors of women were higher than men. In regression analysis, male gender and perceived barriers were found as risk factors for preventive health behaviors. However, female gender, perceived severity, and benefits were protective factors for preventive health behaviors. People with low and moderate anxiety levels were more likely to comply with preventive health behaviors.
