Öğe Asymmetrical growth of beard due to Becker's nevus on the face: a rare presentation(Wiley-Blackwell, 2016) Polat, Mualla; Kaya, HaticeEditor Becker’s nevus otherwise known as Becker’s pigmented hairy nevus, is a hamartoma with brown hyperpigmentation and hypertrichosis.1 The lesions mostly occur in the second and third decades of life and are six times more common in males than in females. Although the lesions may have various shapes, they consistently have a geographic or block like configuration in an irregular fashion; a linear pattern has rarely been reported.1,2 The lesions are most frequently localized on the upper half of the trunk and proximal upper extremities. There have been rare case reports of Becker nevus localized on lower extremities. Becker nevus localized on the face has been reported much more rarely in the literature.2Öğe The blueberry sign(Wiley-Blackwell, 2015) Göksügür, Nadir; Göksügür, Sevil Bilir; Şereflican, Betül; Kaya, HaticeCryotherapy is an effective treatment modality for various skin diseases. It is most commonly used to destroy viral warts, actinic keratosis, and seborrheic keratosis. Although cryotherapy is a relatively safe procedure, it can have a wide variety of side effects.Öğe Can pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A be a marker for the assessment of atherosclerosis risk in patients with chronic plaque psoriasis?(Termedia Publishing House Ltd, 2016) Polat, Mualla; Buğdaycı, Güler; Şahin, Aslı; Kaya, Hatice; Sezer, Tuna; Öztürk, SerkanIntroduction: Psoriasis is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory dermatosis. Several studies have shown that patients with psoriasis have a much greater risk of cardiovascular diseases than the normal population. The chronic inflammation observed in psoriasis is thought to have a role in the development of atherosclerosis and vascular endothelial injury. Aim: To examine serum pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) levels, which has been regarded as a marker of early stage atherosclerosis in patients with psoriasis that do not have concurrent conventional cardiovascular risk markers. Material and methods: Forty-one patients diagnosed with a chronic plaque type of psoriasis and 42 equally matched healthy volunteers were included in this study. The PAPP-A levels were compared between patient and control groups and the association between PAPP-A levels and disease duration and severity were evaluated in the patient group. Results: Statistically, serum PAPP-A levels were significantly higher in the psoriasis group than in the control group (p = 0.015). Serum PAPP-A levels were found to be positively correlated with severity (p = 0.036, r = 0.329) and duration (p = 0.014, r = 0.269) of the disease. Conclusions: As a marker of early stage atherosclerosis, PAPP-A levels were elevated in the psoriasis group and were correlated with disease duration and severity. This elevation reveals the presence of atherosclerosis in patients with psoriasis. Further studies are needed to confirm the use of PAPP-A as an available and inexpensive screening test and cardiovascular risk assessment for all centers.Öğe A case of piezogenic pedal papules associated with mitral valve insufficiency(Turkish Soc Dermatology Venerology, 2012) Polat, Mualla; Kaya, Hatice; Güven, Melih; Gürel, Kamil; Parlak, Ali HaydarPiezogenic pedal papules are hemiations of subcutaneous fat into the dermis. They are soft skin-colored papules and nodules, which appear on the side of the heel when the subject is standing and disappear when weight is taken off the foot Here, we present a 40-year-old male patient with mitral valve insufficiency and piezogenic pedal papules and discuss piezogenic pedal papules in the light of literature.Öğe Evaluation of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio in Turkish patients with chronic plaque psoriasis(Dermatovenerological Soc Slovenia, 2017) Polat, Mualla; Buğdaycı, Güler; Kaya, Hatice; Oğuzman, HamdiIntroduction: This study evaluates the relationship between disease activity and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in patients with chronic plaque psoriasis. Methods: Clinical and biochemical data were retrieved through retrospective examination of patients' and healthy subjects' medical records. NLR and PLR values were calculated from the hemogram results. This study included 46 patients (25 males, 21 females; 36.58 +/- 9.82 years) diagnosed with chronic plaque psoriasis and a control group of 46 healthy volunteers (21 males, 25 females; 34.02 +/- 8.41 years). Results: NLR and PLR were significantly elevated in patients with chronic plaque psoriasis (p = 0.0001 and p = 0.003, respectively). PASI was positively correlated with NLR, PLR, and serum CRP levels (r = 0.313, p = 0.034; r = 0.394, p = 0.017; r = 0.359, p = 0.014, respectively). Conclusion: NLR and PLR are low-cost tests that can be used to determine the severity of current systemic inflammation in patients with chronic plaque psoriasis.Öğe Hızma ile ilişkili piyojenik granülom benzeri burun papülü(Turkish Society of Hematology, 2014) Polat, Mualla; Kaya, Hatice; Parlak, Ali HaydarThe application of body piercing is popular among young people, who consider it as a sign of marginality, beauty, or group identity. Piercing procedure is observed to cause a large number of complications such as infections, pain, inflammatory reactions, bleeding, dental fractures or fissures, and gingival damage, etc., mostly in young individuals. Hizma is a traditional body ornament worn by Anatolian women via a piercing procedure. Herein, we describe a papule of nose mimicking pyogenic granuloma as an uncommon complication of Hızma.Öğe Kronik plak tip psoriazis hastalarının kardiyovasküler risk açısından değerlendirilmesi(Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal Üniversitesi, 2014) Kaya, Hatice; Polat, MuallaPsoriazis immu?n aracılı, kronik, tekrarlayıcı inflamatuar bir dermatoztur. Birc?ok epidemiyolojik c?alısma, psoriazis hastalarının normal popu?lasyona go?re c?ok daha yu?ksek kardiyovasku?ler hastalık riskine sahip oldug?unu go?stermektedir. (p<0,001). Serum endokan du?zeyi ile hastalık su?resi pozitif korelasyon go?stermekteydi (p<0.001, r=0,725). Tei indeksinin, psoriazis grubunda, kontrol grubuna go?re anlamlı derecede yu?ksek oldug?u saptandı (p<0,001). E/A ve E/Em oranının ise hasta grubunda anlamlı derecede du?s?u?k oldug?u saptandı (p<0.001). Sol ventriku?l asenkronisini go?steren tu?m DSG parametrelerinin, psoriasis grubunda kontrol grubuna go?re istatistiksel olarak anlamlı derecede yu?ksek oldug?u tespit edildi (p<0.001). They are the result of an overgrowth of dense fibrous tissue that usually develops after healing of a skin injury, and do not usually regress spontaneously. In addition to symptomatic relief, cosmetic concern is the primary reason patients seek medical intervention. Therapeutic options such as occlusion dressings, intralesional corticosteroids or interferon injections, silicone gel application, cryotherapy, irradiation, and ablative lasers have been used in various combinations. We present the results from two patients who underwent UVA1 laser therapy.Öğe Plantar erythema nodosum associated with granulomatous mastitis(Medknow Publications & Media Pvt Ltd, 2016) Polat, Mualla; Kaya, HaticeSir, Granulomatous mastitis is a rare benign breast disease that has clinical and radiological findings similar to those of breast cancer. Although its etiology is unclear, it commonly coexists with Wegener’s granulomatosis, sarcoidosis, diabetes mellitus, leprosy, and connective tissue disorders. It is rarely reported in association with erythema nodosum.[1-3] Erythema nodosum is a reactive dermatosis with inflammation of the subcutaneous fat. It typically presents as an acute eruption of erythematous, tender subcutaneous nodules over the pretibial areas. Plantar erythema nodosum is rare and is usually seen in children or people with systemic diseases such as Crohn’s disease, Takayasu’s arteritis and after treatment with infliximab.[4,5] We were unable to find any previous reports of plantar erythema nodosum associated with granulomatous mastitis.
