dc.description.abstract | Objective: This study investigated the experiences andcharacteristics of chronic disease patients and their relativesin terms of internet usage for access to health-relatedinformation.Material-Method: A total of 196 patients and 171 relatives wereincluded in this study. The study data were collected throughliterature-based questionnaires developed by the researchers. Results: In this study, 68.8% of the patients and 71.9% ofthe relatives used the internet for access to health-relatedinformation. The difference between participants who usedthe internet for health-related information was determined interms of variables including age, type, and numbers of chronicdiseases. Additionally, their frequency of internet usage, search topics, and online resources to access health-relatedinformation was significantly different (p<0.05). More thanhalf of the participants (patients: 65.4%; relatives: 56.9%)stated they did not share the obtained information with healthcare providers, and no internet source was recommended byhealth professionals. Conclusions: The results of the study indicate that althoughcharacteristics of seeking health-related information onthe internet differed among patients and relatives, theirexperiences and opinions were nearly similar. Thus, healthcare professionals should consider the internet usage status ofthe patients and relatives to access health-related informationand lead them to use reliable and up to date internet resources. They should also guide the creation of online content forchronic disease patients. Moreover, supporting approachesfor patients seeking health-related information on the internetcan be addressed comprehensively in field-specific studies,in-service training, and conferences. | en_US |
