Are preventive actions effective in medical needlestick injuries?

This study was carried out to determine the changes in needlestick injury frequencies before and after the presentation of protective measures program for penetrating sharp object injuries in a hospital [safe injector, safety blood transfusion device (holder), treatment trays including penetrating sharp object bin, disposal bin, cotton bin, etc.]. The study was conducted second-line a hospital, based on retrospective. 2008- 2009 pre-application period and 2010-2011 post-application period the data were considered in the study. Study population comprised all health workers in institutions. The study data analysis was carried out with number, percentage and Pearson, Yates qui-square and Fisher exact qui-square tests. It was determined that exposure the needlestick injuries are 61.7% nurses, 34.0% assistant staff and 4.3% physicians. It was determined in the study that 14.9% of the needlestick injuries occurred when staff did not wear gloves, 40% of the objects causing needlestick injury were contaminated with patient blood and body fluids, 57.4% of the cases occurred in pre-application period, while 42.6% occurred in post-application period, the needlestick injuries was found statistically difference and decreased (p<0.05). After the application of preventive measures program, it was determined that the numbers of patients and workers increased; however, the number of needlestick injuries evidently decreased on the contrary. It was determined that exposure after the procedure was decreased significantly in the needlestick injuries (p<0.05).
