Öğe Reinforcement and erosion of traditional gender roles among young people in a poor metropolitan area of Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2017) Enneli, Halil Çağlar; Enneli, PınarThis paper aims to contribute to the existing studies on the young women's transition to adulthood in the case of Turkish women's exclusion from the labour market. The issue is discussed largely within the boundaries of traditional gender restrictions that keep women out of employment. Herein, we argue that the gender-based control of young women, perceived as the reason for their exclusion from the labour market, may be used by disadvantaged women as a way of avoiding difficult and unfavourable employment situations. Similarly, the gender roles imposed on men could also not be fulfilled due to the same restrictive labour market conditions. Furthermore, we suggest that the poverty simultaneously strengthens and erodes the very base of the traditional gender structure for both young women and young men, while forcing the young women out of employment and the young men to the unstable working conditions. This argument is based on a study conducted in Altnda, Ankara with a sample of 279 females and 340 males aged between 15 and 24. A mixed methodology, comprising a survey questionnaire followed by 60 in-depth interviews and 4 focus group discussions, was employed for this study.Öğe Does small run-of-river hydro power development in Turkey deliver on its sustainability premise?(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2016) Konak, Nahide; Eryılmaz, Yeşim SunguIn responding to the threat of climate change, securing adequate energy reserves while conserving ecosystems constitutes one of the greatest challenges that contemporary societies face. Drawing on frame analysis and sustainability frameworks, this article examines the complex nature of conflicts over small run-of-river hydropower (SHP) developments that were initiated in response to energy, economic, and climate security issues in Turkey. We argue that controversies over SHPs arise when three goals of sustainability are not adequately reached at once: economic development, ecological preservation, and equity. Failing to balance these three sustainable development goals in SHP projects results in three sources of conflicts. Thus, we further argue that controversy over SHP is a controversy over property, resources, and development conflicts.Öğe Ageing in the rural area: quality of life and associated factors in Sivas/Turkey(Gunes Kitabevi Ltd Sti, 2016) Güler, Nuran; Güler, Zühal; Özsel, DoğancanIntroduction: This study aimed to identify the Quality of Life (QOL) and associated factors among rural elders. They represent a growing percentage in the national population today and have become increasingly isolated in villages that are being drained due to migration flows from rural to urban areas. Materials and Method: The universe of the present cross-sectional study consists of people of and over the age of 65 living in villages of the Zara district in Sivas Province. The study sample is composed of 20 villages and 577 elderly individuals living in these villages. The data were collected with the use of a personal information form, the WHOQOL-Bref QOL scale, the Geriatric Depression scale, and the Barthel Index of Activities of Daily Living through face-to-face interviews. The data thus obtained were evaluated on the SPSS software through the implementation of the distribution measures, Mann-Whitney U test, and Kruskall-Wallis Variance test. Results: Twenty-five per cent of the elderly individuals included in the study perceive their health status as being poor. The difference between gender, age, education, economic status, health perception, dependency information, and score averages in all subfield scores of QOL among the elderly was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: Advanced age, female gender, chronic disease, depression, perception of health as poor, dependency, and constantly living in a village were determined to be among the negative factors that affect the elderly's QOL.Öğe Antonio Gramsci's Democratic Model of Education(Istanbul Univ, Fac Letters, Dept Sociology, 2015) Durakoğlu, Abdullah; Güney, ÜlküThis study discusses the ideas of the Italian philosopher Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) with respect to the democratic model of education. It considers hegemony as one of the basic concepts to analyse the relation between dominance and leadership. The theory of hegemony is an integral part of Gramsci's discussion about the questions of education in Prison Notes. To reproduce hegemony Gramsci assigns important roles to intellectuals in the education system as they may contribute to or counteract the reproduction of hegemony through teaching. This study covers Gramsci's critique about the modern educational system and reveals that such critique does not target the problem of whether the relation between education and politics should be eliminated. In this context, the study results expose that, for Gramsci, democratic education could be possible through the effect of education on politics, not the effect of politics on education.Öğe Turkish-German cinema reconsidered : stereotypes, ethnic performance and topographies of loss in Karamuk(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2014) Kılıçbay, Barış BoraThis article offers a critical reading of a teleological tendency that informed and still exercises a considerable influence on many analyses of Turkish-German cinema. These analytical tools define Turkish-German migrant cinema as a 'cinema of duty', which creates a stereotypical image of the Turk carrying a 'burden of representation', and seek to replace these narratives with those that ostensibly liberate Turkish Germans from this burden by celebrating instead the 'pleasures of hybridity'. The author's intention in this article is to offer a more developed reading of these previously denigrated stereotypes and to argue that in their afterlives stereotypes of the guest worker represent much more than simple arrested images. All of this is related to a reading of Sulbiye Gunar's 2002 film Karamuk, which has been ironically examined as one of the rare Turkish-German films to move away from the outdated stereotype of the Turkish guest worker. However, this article sets out to argue contrarily that the film stages the pliancy of the stereotype by stripping it from the Turk in order to observe its subtle reappearance in the unsuspecting German, and thus reveals novel performances of stereotypes that complicate categories of ethnicity and identity.Öğe Paulo Freire's alternative education model(Kamla-Raj Enterprises, 2013) Durakoğlu, Abdullah; Biçer, Baykal; Zabun, BeyhanPaulo Freire, a Brazilian philosopher, aims to liberate people. In order to achieve this aim, he offers problem-posing education. According to this method, designed as an alternative to traditional education models, education should not be provided through one-sided imposition by teachers. This study provides information about problem-posing education model while it also compares this model with the most common traditional education method, which is called banking education by Freire. Furthermore, the study also includes information on the term "dialog, one of the most frequently used techniques in Freire's education model. However, as Freire emphasizes, dialog is not only an education technique, but also a tool that must be used by all people to encounter others. Therefore, dialog is examined in the context of both meanings of the term in the last part of the study. In addition, the study reveals that the method offered by Freire is similar to some of the popular methods that are used nowadays, but they have some differences in terms of how they came out and what they aim in general.Öğe Politics of/and popular music - An analysis of the history of arabesk music from the 1960s to the 1990s in Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd., 2008) Yarar, BetülThe subject of this paper is the relationship between politics and popular culture with a particular focus on the relationship between the politics of the New Right and arabesk music in Turkey in the 1980s. This issue is approached from a socio-historical perspective concentrating not only on the process of social transformation that occurred in the 1980s and the 1990s, but also on the history of the emergence and transformation of modern government and the arabesk music genre in Turkey. Arabesk emerged in the 1960s as the music of the popular masses despite various official measures aimed at inhibiting its expansion. In spite of this historical background, today there is a growing suspicion and belief that arabesk lost its protest character either through its articulation with the New Right's hegemonic project or by becoming a part of recently expanded consumption culture in Turkey. It is true that the 1980s was a transitional period led by the New Right and this has had important effects on popular culture in general and on arabesk music in particular. But does it mean that arabesk died? This paper deals with this question and studies new socio-cultural dynamics that emerged in the 1980s and the 1990s within the context of arabesk music in Turkey. It argues that all the changes that occurred in this period are forcing us to think in a new matrix of relations (economic, political and cultural), within which arabesk is multiplied or fragmented into new subgenres and audience groups. We must also articulate more complex questions than those dichotomic ones such as 'if arabesk is dead or alive', if we like to understand new cultural trends underlying our present world and the political potential that they hold for us.Öğe Southern Anatolian project (SAP) and forced migration in Turkey: resettlement in Aydin/Didim and Konya/Yenikent due to Karakaya Dam(2011) Güler, Zuhal; Savaş, GökhanThe aim of this study is to compare the lives of families in Denizkoy (115 households) and Yenikent Village (132 households) who were influenced by one of the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP-SAP) dams before and after they were resettled by the state 'out of the region.' By focusing on rural and urban characteristics, the purpose of this analytical comparison is to identify the cultural pattern formed by their (dis)integration to the regions where they resettled. The questions this essay addresses are: If the construction of a dam is inevitable for the development of the state and the region, is it possible to make a balance between the winners and the losers in terms of social costs? If so, in what ways can this balance be made? We aim to examine the notion of sustainable development from the perspective of those directly influenced by the Karakaya Dam who were subject to rural resettlement out of the region. Within this context, we conducted interviews with people from 200 households (100 from each village). The data was collected through questionnaires and in-depth interviews.Öğe The emergence of environmental concerns and the judicial system: river-based hydro schemes in Turkey(Common Ground Research Networks, 2012) Konak, NahideThe policy commitments of the Turkish government to renewable energy have been driven primarily by its recognition of the increasing demand for energy and the necessity of becoming an energy independent country, which, in turn led to an increasing interest in all aspects of renewable energy, especially in hydro energy. The controversy surrounding hydro energy development has shown that renewable energy is not without environmental costs. This paper evaluates how the Rize judicial body plays a role in protecting the local environment with its court order. The verdict of the Rize court regarding the approval of an environmental impact assessment conducted by the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forestry related to constructing a river-based electric scheme on the Iyidere River in Ikizdere, Rize illustrates the issues involved. This case study demonstrates that the executive regulatory system and decision-making process have not been very successful at balancing the national and global demand for hydro renewable energy against the local impact of hydro development. The Turkish executive body, particularly the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, has favored global and national demand for hydro development over local environmental protection. In contrast, the Rize court weighed the costs and benefits and came down in favor of protecting the local environment. The verdict insists that the national and global drive for hydro renewable energy need must not override the need to protect the local environment from the environmental impact of hydro-electric development. First, the court decision provides an excellent example of the way in which the judicial approach to environmental issues has challenged the executive approach. Second, it provides some insights into how the Rize judicial system seeks to reconcile renewable energy policy and the local environmental impacts of hydro developments. Third, the application of the sustainable development principle is particularly interesting in this context. Fourth, the case illustrates the growing significance of European Community environmental law in the decision-making process.Öğe Environmental education in the context of child’s interaction with nature according to Maria Montessori(Kamla-Raj Enterprises, 2014) Durakoğlu, AbdullahThis paper addresses the ideas of Maria Montessori (1870-1952), Italian educator who established the most widespread educational method of the world, in relation to environmental education in the context of child-nature interaction as well as the practices applied within the framework of these ideas. The paper is composed of two parts. The first part includes the ideas of Montessori about child-nature interaction and information on how such interaction takes place in Montessori schools. The second part of the paper comprises of the ideas of Montessori about environmental education and information on the practices applied within the framework of environmental education. Therefore, the paper includes information on both theory and practice. In the consequence of the paper, it was observed that Montessori attributed great importance to human contact with nature and that her method laid emphasis on this idea.Öğe Hegemonic struggle, the state and popular culture the case of football in Turkey(2005) Yarar, BetülIt is generally acknowledged that the 1980s, which was marked by the rise of the New Right, was a turning point in the history of Turkey. Turkish football fans and supporters also witnessed the beginning of a process of radical transformation in football within the same period. This article seeks to shed light on the new hegemonic politics of the New Right via a critical analysis of the mechanisms through which the New Right's politics and football were articulated in Turkey in the 1980s. Having been inspired by Grossberg's theory of politics of popular culture, the article argues that the success of the New Right includes not only its ideological ability to mobilize the masses around its hegemonic project, but also its capacity to reconstruct popular practices and popular formations such as football. The chapter underlines how Islamic expressions and representations have recently become much more apparent and used for providing privileges in the unequal economic structure. Based on a qualitative research in two universities, one private and one public, Enneli and Enneli draw attention to the students’ dissimilar modes of marking headscarf and religiosity and conclude with a relationship between them and the labour market opportunities, thought to be available in the future. Keywords Muslim Woman Muslim Community Social Field Career Expectation Muslim IdentityÖğe Hacı Bektaş Veli ve Soren Kierkegaard'ın ideal insan tipi(2015) Durakoğlu, Abdullah13. yüzyıl Türk mutasavvıfı Hacı Bektaş Veli’nin düşüncesi insan odaklıdır. Zira her iki düşünür de İbrahim Peygamber’in öyküsü üzerinde değerlendirmelerde bulunarak imanı, sadece Tanrı’ya inanma olarak değil de Tanrı için en sevdiğinden bile vazgeçme, acılara karşı direnç gösterme ve en önemlisi Tanrı’ya teslimiyet olarak görmektedir.Öğe Expectations of elderly people regarding urban renewal based on their cultural capital: The case of Istanbul(2020) Bay, Betül Duman; Şentürk, Murat; Otrar, Mustafa; Güler, ZuhalIntroduction: This study analyzes expectations of the elderly (over 65 years of age) residents of Istanbul regarding urban renewal on the basis of their cultural capital. The literature review indicated that a very limited number of studies existed that focused on urban renewal while considering elderly people’s views. In those studies, the elderly often is either treated as a homogenous group or separated on the basis of their ethnicity and/or socioeconomic status. Therefore, this study was conducted to fill an important gap in the literature, namely that the analysis of the differentiation of urban renewal expectations of the elderly based on their cultural capital. Materials and Methods: The data were collected via face-to-face surveys conducted with 1818 elderly people in 20 districts. In this study, cultural capital was operationalized in line with the embodied and institutionalized aspects as well as the taste dimension. Moreover, an urban renewal expectations scale was developed, and a one-way analysis of variance was carried out among the elderly based on their cultural capital and their scores in the urban renewal expectations scale. Results: The study highlights elderly people’s expectations of urban renewal with regard to their economic profits and the physical and social improvement of the housing and environment in which they live. Conclusion: The low-cultural capital group has been identified as the most fragile group, and the negative consequences of urban renewal that may result in displacement, family division, and isolation have been emphasized.Öğe An analysis of Albert Camus’ revolt philisophy in the context of his novel ‘The Plague’(2016) Durakoğlu, Abdullah; Cebecioğlu, GülçinThe aim of this paper is to analyze reflections of revolt philosophy put forth by French philosopher Albert Camus in his novel ‘The Plague’. In the first part of the paper formed with three parts, the place of Albert Camus in the Existential Philosophy is mentioned. Opposed to the philosophers who think that people have to believe in the existence of God to know themselves, it is important to question concrete human-being for Camus. As a result of this questioning, he cannot explain the meaning of the situation people are in, life and the reality that everything comes to an end with that with mind and believing. Starting from this idea he bases his ideas on the terms of ridiculous, revolt and suicide. So, in the second part, Albert Camus’ terms absurd, revolt and suicide are discussed. In the third part, understandings of God and religion, main problems of the study are dealt on the context of religion and reverend images in the novel The Plague. Camus who mainly intends to question human life uses the plague as a metaphor in his novel. As a result of this plague he symbolizes dreadful feelings of suffering, fear of death etc. that they can come across throughout his life. In addition to this, he also put an emphasis on the idea that religious doctrines cannot answer any questions on how people lead their lives. Generally taken it is seen that Camus supports the idea “Even if God exists, nothing will change.” with his novel. This idea can be qualified as one of the most hugging messages of the novel. However, it doesn’t come to mean that Albert Camus is a sheer supporter of atheism.Öğe Yas ne zaman birleştirir?: Açık yaralarla yaşamak(2010) Bora, AksuÖzet: Bu yazıda, "Türkiye toplumunu birarada tutan nedir?" sorusuna yanıt aramaya çalışacağım.
