    The effect of lavender and rosemary aromatherapy application on cognitive functions, anxiety, and sleep quality in the elderly with diabetes

    Objective: This study aimed to determine the effects of aromatherapy use on cognitive function, anxiety, and sleep quality in the elderly with diabetes. Methods: The study was conducted with 63 participants aged 65 and over. Participants were randomly divided into three groups: lavender, rosemary and control groups. The intervention continued for four weeks. Data was collected using the Blessed Orientation Concentration Test, State-Trait Anxiety Scale, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U/Kruskal-Wallis, Wilcoxon and Friedman tests. Results: In both intervention groups, the 4th week scores of cognitive functions, anxiety, and sleep quality after aromatherapy were significant compared to the baseline scores. In the control group, state anxiety scores were significantly higher in the 2nd and 4th weeks compared to the initial scores. Conclusions: Inhaling lavender and rosemary has been observed to improve cognitive function and sleep quality and reduce anxiety levels. The effects of the essential oils used in the research were evaluated over four weeks. It is thought that studying for a longer period and with more samples would be beneficial. There is a need for studies examining its effects, especially in the elderly with diabetes.

    Evaluation of factors affecting fatigue in hemodialysis patients

    The aim of this study is to evaluate the factors affecting fatigue in patients undergoing hemodialysis due to chronic renal failure. The study was conducted as an analytic study in two dialysis units (a state and a private unit). Data was collected from 90 patients 18 year old or over who underwent hemodialysis due to chronic renal failure and agreed to participate in the research. A "Patient Information Form" was used to obtain information about the patients' socio-demographic and disease-related characteristics and the "Visual Analog Scale" was used to determine the patients' level of fatigue in the pre-dialysis, during the dialysis treatment and in the postdialysis period. It was found that the patients had been diagnosed with renal failure for 6.4±4.9 years, 30% had been under hemodialysis treatment for 4-6 years, 84.4% received dialysis treatment three times or more in a week, 68.9% had another chronic disease. It was also determined that the patients suffered from fatigue by 52.2% in the pre-dialysis period, by 43.3% during the dialysis application and by 84.4 in the post-dialysis period. A significant positive relationship was found between the patients' age and their fatigue score means in the postdialysis period (r:0.36 p<0.01). It was found that the patients receiving hemodialysis treatment had higher levels of fatigue particularly in the post-dialysis period and their fatigue in the pre-dialysis, during the dialysis treatment and in the post-dialysis period affected their daily lives. It was concluded that preparing education programs for the patients' post-hemodialysis fatigue management and arranging weekly patient group meetings for them to share their experiences of fatigue would be beneficial.

    HEMŞİRELERİN PROFESYONEL TUTUMLARI İLE BUNU ETKİLEYEN FAKTÖRLERİN İNCELENMESİ

    Amaç: Bu araştırma, hemşirelerin mesleki profesyonel tutumlarını ve bunu etkileyebilecek bazı faktörleri incelemek amacıyla tanımlayıcı ve analitik desende yapıldı.Yöntem: Araştırma Nisan-Mayıs 2010 tarihleri arasında Bolu ili İzzet Baysal Devlet Hastanesi’nde (Köroğlu Birimi) çalışan hemşirelerle gerçekleştirildi. Araştırmanın örneklemini bu birimde çalışan 89 hemşire oluşturdu. Veriler hemşire tanıtım formu ve Meslekte Profesyonel Tutum Envanteri (MPTE) kullanılarak toplandı. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde ortalama, standart sapma, sayı, yüzdelik ile non-parametrik testlerden Kruskal Wallis Testi ile Mann-Whitney U Testi kullanıldı.Bulgular: Hemşirelerin MPTE toplam puan ortalaması 140.28.01±11.99 (32-160 puan) olarak bulundu. Hemşirelerin eğitim durumu, çalışma süresi, görev şekli, nöbet tutma durumu, meslekten memnuniyet durumu ve bilimsel toplantılara katılma durumu gibi özelliklerinin profesyonel tutumu olumlu yönde etkilediği saptandı.Sonuç: Hemşirelerin profesyonel tutum puanlarının iyi düzeyde olduğu söylenebilir.

    A study of the validity and reliability of the “Elderly Diabetes Burden scale” for the Turkish society

    Giriş: Bu çalışma, yaşlı bireylerin diyabet hastalığından kaynaklanan yüklerini belirlemek için Araki ve Ito tarafından 2003 yılında geliştirilen “Elderly Diabetes Burden Scale-Yaşlılarda Diyabetin Yükü Ölçeği”nin Türk toplumu için geçerlik ve güvenirliğini incelemek amacı ile metodolojik olarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmada geçerlik ve güvenirlik çalışmalarındaki örneklem büyüklüğü madde sayısının en az beş katı ya da ideal olarak 10 katı olması gerektiği bilgisini temel alarak, 22 maddeli “Yaşlılarda Diyabetin Yükü Ölçeği-Elderly Diabetes Burden Scale” için 230 yaşlı diyabetik ile görüşülmüştür. Bulgular: Ölçeğe uygulanan faktör analizi sonucunda ölçeğin toplam varyansın %74.8’ini açıklayan 6 faktör elde edilmiştir. Ölçeğin iç tutarlılığı için Cronbach Alpha değeri 0.92 bulunmuştur ve bu değer ölçeğin yüksek düzeyde güvenilir olduğunu göstermektedir. Sonuç: “Yaşlılarda Diyabetin Yükü Ölçeği-Elderly Diabetes Burden Scale” ölçme aracının ”nin Türk toplumu için geçerli ve güvenilir olduğu saptanmıştır.
