    Agent-based FMS control

    Future manufacturing systems will be integrated into the networks of distributed resources, and at the same time, such systems will be capable of processing both knowledge and material. It will probably be required that manufacturing Systems be agile, flexible, and fault-tolerant. Petri nets (PN) and object-oriented design (OOD) are used together in order to develop the integrated agent-based FMS control system. The flexible manufacturing system (FMS) consists of machines, workstations, and automated material handling system, distributed buffer storage sites and computer-based supervisory control, all which can be modeled as an agent in ODD with PN. This paper introduces the design of an agent-based FMS control system through PNs and evaluates the performance using timed placed Petri nets (TPPN). In order to do so, the agent control design, FMS structure has been evaluated in detail and the agent definitions have been submitted. The system includes the sharing and distribution of tasks among agents and the mentioned structure has been Simulated by TPPN. The simulation procedure has been realized through Petri Net 2.0-MATLAB Demo Program [Mahulea CF, Motcovschi MH, Pastravanu O. Department of Automatic Control Industrial Informatics, Technical University "Gh. Each case is modeled, and then the agent's machine processing time is considered in this program.     Comparison of OR and AI methods in discrete manufacturing using fuzzy logic

    Since 1950s the techniques of Operations Research (OR) and Optimization have been utilized to increase the efficiency of the production systems. With the widespread use of computers, it has even become easier to deal with industrial problems. However the complexity of the problems still reveals the difficulty in providing solutions. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) seems to attract the attention of the researcher to overcome to the difficulties. This has already been realized with several successful applications. In this study, the use of AI and OR techniques is compared using fuzzy logic. The progress of manufacturing systems, characteristics of production processes, system managements and system behavior are taken into account. The study is focussed on only discrete manufacturing.

    Multi-agent enterprise sustainability performance measurement system

    Sustainability grounds the development debate in a global framework, within which a continuous satisfaction of human needs constitute the ultimate goal. When transposing this idea to the business level, corporate sustainability can accordingly be defined as meeting the needs of a firm's direct and indirect stakeholders without compromising its ability to meet the needs of future stakeholders as well. Based on the definition of corporate sustainability, the goal of sustainable development is to integrate the economic, social and ecological impacts of our patterns of production and consumption into forms of development that are designed for long-term sustainability. But for the transition to sustainability, performance must be assessed, which has posed important challenges to the researchers in providing efficient but reliable tools. A number of principles, tools and reporting formats have emerged, some of which are adopted by corporations to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable development. In the context of sustainability measurement and management, to the extent of our knowledge, no study has been performed to develop an agent based or multi agent integrated decision making tool that can meet organizational needs at the decision making level. Given the characteristics of a typical agent system and system requirements for today's organizational sustainability assessment, it is concluded that a multi-agent based system can be a useful tool in such environments to put together a coordinated workflow of collaborating agents. In this research, considering the need for multi-agent approach in the context of sustainability assessment, a multi-agent system with integrated multi-criteria tools is developed to measure, compare and communicate the sustainability performances of an organization. The proposed system is designed consistent with the fact that no uniform agreed multi-criteria methodology exists for aggregation of composite indicators for sustainability evaluation. Therefore, in this study, several multi-criteria methods are used simultaneously instead of selecting the best method for the situation. To test the proposed methodology, data obtained from a grocery retailer is used. Finally, discussion, implications and some concluding remarks are provided.
