Öğe Associations of Social Anxiety and Depression with Cognitions Related to Problematic Internet Use in Youths(Turkish Education Assoc, 2013) Durak, Mithat; Senol-Durak, EmrePresence of psychopathology (e.g., depression and anxiety) has found to be related to an increased vulnerability to develop problematic Internet use (PIU). The current study aimed to investigate the effects of social anxiety and depression on cognitions related to PIU based on a cognitive behavioral framework in youths. The Online Cognition Scale (OCS), The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) and Demographic Information Form were administered and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to ascertain these effects as well as to determine the roles of socio-demographic variables (age, gender, type of residence, and monthly income), romantic relationship status, and time spent online, using a sample of 448 Turkish university students aged 18 to 25 years. The results revealed significant effects of gender (being male) and time spent online on cognitions about PIU. However, the effects of romantic relationship status were found to be insignificant. Fear/anxiety and depression were positively correlated with cognitions about PIU. Avoidance was not found to be correlated with cognitions about PIU. Examining the roles of social anxiety and depression in PIU will improve our understanding of PIU and contribute to the design of future studies.Öğe POST-TRAUMATIC GROWTH AMONG OLDER ADULTS(Taylor and Francis, 2023) Senol-Durak, Emre; Durak, MithatResearch on the psychological impacts of trauma in old age has focused on negative repercussions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); however, there may also be a positive alteration in the lives of older adults. Experiences, perspectives, and insights that come with maturation contribute to an increased capacity for adaptation to novel circumstances. This chapter discusses traumatic experiences, resilience, and post-traumatic growth (PTG) in older adults and its domains across types of traumas and significant life events, social resources, and psychological aspects associated with PTG, and offers implications and considerations for future study. Older adults present different reports of different domains of PTG such that appreciation of life, relating to others, and personal strength are most likely to be noticed, whereas reports of the new opportunities domain are limited. Future research should investigate the nature of PTG in older people who have experienced a variety of traumatic events, emphasizing the influence of different kinds of traumas and related obstacles. The chapter concludes with practice implications as the demand is higher than ever before for PTG-enhancing treatments to address the needs of older people encountering various life challenges to support them in remaining safe in an aging society. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Roni Berger.Öğe The role of self-esteem in internet addiction: A comparison between Turkish, Polish and Ukrainian samples(University of Zaragoza, 2016) B?achnio, Agata; Przepiórka, Aneta; Senol-Durak, Emre; Durak, Mithat; Sherstyuk, LyubomyrBackground and Objectives: Internet use, which has become extremely important and essential in everyday life, often leads to problematic use. The main aim of our study was to answer the question of whether self-esteem is a predictor of Internet addiction. Methods: The participants were 1,011 people from three countries: Turkey (N = 320), Poland (N = 350), and Ukraine (N = 341). Young’s Internet Addiction Test and Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale were used. Results: Results provide evidence that self-esteem is a predictor of Internet addiction and that this pattern is found across cultures. Conclusions: People who approach themselves with heavy self-criticism and evaluate themselves as unworthy are more prone to Internet addiction. More research is also needed to provide a better understanding of the Internet addiction phenomenon and its relation to self-esteem, personality, and culture. © 2016, University of Zaragoza.
