Chalky spot damage caused by stink bugs on red lentil seeds in Southeast Anatolia Region, Turkey
(Agricultural Research Communication Centre, 2016) Mutlu, Çetin; Karaca, Vedat; Eren, Sedat; Büyük, Musa; Gözüaçık, Celalettin; Kütük, Halil
Chalky spot damage on red lentil is the most important. problem waiting for a solution regarding plant health at lentil cultivation. in. Southeast Anatolia Region, Turkey. The stink bugs, Piezedorus lituratus (F.) and Dolycorus baccarum L. were subjected to trialsincages and in sprayed and unsprayed plot trials in open lentil fields and fields containing windrowed lentils after harvesting. The study revealed that P lituratus and D. baccarum feeding on red lentil caused chalky spot damage: Average damage,to lentil seeds caused by P lituratus, was 13% and 7.8% and by D. baccarum was 4.9% and 2% in 2010 and 2011, respectively. There was a positive relation between P. lituratus density and chalky spot damage.(r =0.788; r(2) =0.621, P=0.000). The study also showed that after the harvesting, the stink bugs gathered under windrowed lentils and continued feeding and causing chalky spot damage. The damage in unsprayed windrowed lentils (6.60%) was approximately 12-fold higher than that in sprayed windrowed lentils (0.57%). Study suggests conduction of future work on environmental friendly control methods of stink bugs and alternative harvesting methods.

Efficiency of pheromone water traps and life cycle of Tuta absoluta (lepidoptera: gelechiidae) in Diyarbakır province, Turkey
(Parlar Scientific Publications (P S P), 2017) Bayram, Yunus; Duman, Mehmet; Büyük, Musa; Mutlu, Çetin
The first detection of Tomato leaf miner, [(Tuta absoluta) (Meyrick, 1917) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)] in Turkey was in 2009 and it rapidly spread and became the major pest in the areas where tomato is cultivated, including Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey. The aim of this study was to investigate the infestation status, life cycle and efficiency of pheromone water traps of Tomato leaf miner in Diyarbakir province, Turkey. The studies were conducted in farmers' fields and Diyarbakir Plant Protection Research Institute trial field between 2011-2013 years. Tomato leaf miners were subjected to trials in cages and the pheromone water traps were used for biotechnical control at open tomato fields. The infestation rate of T. absoluta was low in seedling stage and during ripening period of fruit and the infestation rate reached up to 100% and continued until the harvest in both years in the Central and Bismil districts of Diyarbakir. The pheromone water traps were not sufficient to control T. absoluta in spite of a large number of males caught. Adults of T. absoluta flying were recorded during at the end of March (8-12 degrees C and 62-75% relative humidity). Five generations were determined for T. absoluta with an average of 40 days for each generation and it was affected by extremely high temperatures and low humidity conditions.

The influence of different intensities of chalky spot damage on seed germination, grain yield and economic returns of red lentil
(Springer, 2020) Mutlu, Çetin; Çiftci, Vahdettin; Yeken, Mehmet Zahit; Mamay, Mehmet
Chalky spot damage caused by Dolycoris baccarum (L.) and Piezodorus lituratus (F.) causes significant losses to productivity and marketing lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) in southeastern Anatolia region, Turkey. The chalky spot-damaged grains attract lower price in the market, which decreases productivity. Limited is known about the influence of varying intensities of chalky spot damage on seed germination, productivity and economic returns of lentil in the region. The current study was conducted to assess the influence of varying intensities of chalky spot damage, on seed germination, yield and economic returns of lentil in laboratory and field. Seeds of different lentil cultivars (5 for laboratory and 2 for field studies) were sorted to get 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% damaged seeds with chalky spot. The data relating to grain weight, reduction and percent reduction in 1000-grain weight were collected. Seed germination of Altintoprak, cagil, Firat-87, Seyran and Tigris with varying chalky spot damage intensities was inferred in laboratory, whereas seed germination and yield of cagil and Tigris cultivars was observed under field conditions. The 1000-grain weight, seed germination percentage under laboratory and field conditions, grain yield and gross income were linearly decreased with increasing intensity of chalky spot damage. The cultivar cagil observed lower reduction in grain yield and gross income compared to Tigris cultivar. It is recommended that non-damaged, certified seeds should be sown in the region to get higher grain yield and economic returns of lentil.
