Evaluation of eye and serum findings in different waters in rabbits by drowning and submersion modeling
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2024) Yılmaz, Aziz; Hösükler, Erdem; Kaymaz, Abdülgani; Üçgül, Ahmet Yücel; Erkol, Zehra Zerrin
Background/aim: This study investigated serum, vitreous, and anterior chamber fluid electrolyte changes, corneal thickness (CT), corneal volume (CV), anterior chamber volume (ACV), and anterior chamber depth (ACD) as an auxiliary diagnostic method in the identification of drowning in fresh or salt water. Materials and methods: The study used 35 healthy, adult, male, white New Zealand rabbits, seperated into five groups (control, saltwater drowning (SWD), saltwater immersion (SWI), freshwater drowning (FWD), freshwater immersion (FWI)). CT, CV, ACV, and ACD measurements were made with Pentacam topography at 0, 2, and 4 h in all groups. Magnesium (mg), sodium (Na), and chlorine (Cl) were measured in the blood at 0 and 2 h, and in blood, vitreous fluid, and humor aqueous at 4 h. Results: It was determined that CT, CV, ACV, and ACD are not of great value in drowning diagnosis and are affected by the fresh or salt water rather than drowning. Vitreous Na, Cl, and Mg levels are ineffective in determining drowning after one h. Anterior chamber fluid may provide valuable information in the differentiation freshwater - saltwater drownings at the 4th h in corpses retrieved from water. Conclusion: Anterior chamber fluid Na and Cl levels, especially in corpses removed from salt water, can be an easily used test that can help diagnose drowning.

Optik koherens tomografi ile arka kutup analizi ve maküla kalınlığı ölçüm modu sonuçlarının tek taraflı anizometropik ambliyoplarda karşılaştırılması
(The Turkish Journal of Ophthalmology, 2013) Ulaş, Fatih; Kaymaz, Abdülgani; Doğan, Ümit; Erdurmuş, Mesut; Çelebi, Serdal
Purpose: To compare the optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements using posterior pole analysis (PPA) and macular thickness measurement mode in pediatric cases with unilateral anisometropic amblyopia. Material and Method: This study included 74 eyes of 37 patients aging between 6-17 years with unilateral anisometropic amblyopia. PPA and macular thickness measurement mode OCT scans were performed, and measurements of amblyopic and fellow eyes were evaluated. All OCT scans were performed by a single experienced doctor without pupil dilation within one session. Measurement sequence was randomly assigned for PPA and macular thickness measurement mode for amblyopic and fellow eyes. Retinal thickness measurements by using PPA and macular thickness measurement mode were compared using the paired samples t-test. Statistical analyses of retinal thickness differences between the amblyopic and fellow eyes were determined using the independent samples t-test. Results: P PA and macular thickness measurement mode results of the amblyopic eyes did not reveal any statistically significant difference for all studied segments (p-values for all segments were over 0.10). P PA and macular thickness measurement mode results of the fellow eyes did not reveal any statistically significant difference for all studied segments (p-values for all segments were over 0.16), except for the temporal segment (p=0.04). There was no statistically significant difference between macular thickness of the amblyopic and fellow eye for both measurement modes. Discus si on: Macular thickness measurements using different scanning modes of OCT revealed similar retinal thickness in amblyopic and fellow eyes of patients with unilateral anisometropic amblyopia, but temporal macular segment measurements should be evaluated cautiously.
