Öğe ASSESSMENT OF ORAL HEALTH-RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG ELDERLY PATIENTS WITH PERIODONTAL DISEASE(Gunes Kitabevi Ltd Sti, 2018) Gokturk, Ozge; Yarkac, Fatma UcanIntroduction: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of oral health-related quality of life in elderly patients with periodontal disease. Materials and Method: In total, 110 elderly patients (age range 65 to 92) were included in this study. The Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index questionnaire was used to determine the perceived oral health-related quality of life of the participants. Gingival index, plaque index, clinical attachment level, probing pocket depth, and bleeding on probing measurements were performed to determine the periodontal status. Results: The total Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index score was significantly higher among elderly patients with severe periodontitis (25.69 +/- 6.80) than among those with gingivitis (21.35 +/- 7.01). Higher scores indicate a poorer oral health-related quality of life among elders with periodontal disease. Furthermore, this score was significantly associated with gingival recession, mobile teeth, and oral malodor (p<0.05). Conclusion: As the severity of periodontal disease increases, a poorer oral health-related quality of life is observed. Having an overview of the adverse effects of periodontal problems on the daily life of elderly patients will facilitate the understanding of the relationship between general health and oral health. Additionally, the assessment of oral health-related quality of life may play an important role in clinical practice regarding identification of patients' oral health conditions and treatment needs and improving patient communication.Öğe Development and validation of the periodontal aesthetic perception scale in patients with periodontal problems(Wiley, 2018) Gokturk, Ozge; Yarkac, FatmaUcan; Basol, GulsahAim The aim of this study was to develop and validate a periodontal aesthetic-specific tool to assess aesthetic conditions perceived by patients with periodontal problems. Materials and MethodsResultsHundred patients were interviewed that described the nonaesthetic gingival appearance. An item pool with 22 items was generated. Subsequently, expert opinion on the selected item pool was gathered. In accordance with expert opinions, the questionnaire was finalized by reducing the number of items to 7. The questionnaire tested on three patient groups (gingival recession group, gingival enlargement group and periodontal healthy group). Then, the validity and reliability of the questionnaire were examined. According to the results of the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), 1 item was removed from the scale. The final 6-item questionnaire was shown to have a two-domain structure. Cronbach's alpha for the whole scale was 0.766. The interclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) values were between 0.98 and 1.00, demonstrating excellent agreement. Overall, these findings indicated that the Periodontal Aesthetic Perception Scale (PAPS) has good reliability. ConclusionThis reliable, valid and short questionnaire specific to aesthetic conditions perceived by patients with periodontal problems may serve as a valued instrument in future clinical trials.Öğe Sex steroid levels and stress-related markers in pregnant and non-pregnant women and the effect of periodontal therapy(Medicina Oral S L, 2024) Gokturk, Ozge; Yarkac, Fatma Ucan; Avcioglu, FatmaBackground: Periodontal disease during pregnancy can produce adverse events; in the current study stress was investigated as an exacerbating factors of periodontal disease. The aims of this study were to evaluate the possible associations between stress and pregnancy through scanning for gingivitis and to explore the effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy (NPT) on stress-related markers (CgA, AA, beta-endorphin, DHEA, sIgA and NPY) and sex steroid levels (estrogen and progesterone) in pregnant and non-pregnant women. Material and methods: A total of 87 subjects; 22 pregnant women with gingivitis, 25 periodontally healthy pregnant women; 22 non-pregnant women with gingivitis and 15 periodontally healthy non-pregnant women, participated in this study. Periodontal clinical measures, stress hormones and sex steroid levels were measured at baseline and following the periodontal therapy. Results: While periodontal therapy showed an improvement in salivary CgA, AA, beta-endorphin, DHEA, and sIgA levels (p<0.05) in non-pregnant women with gingivitis; neuropeptide Y levels were found to be unaffected (p>0.05). There were no significant changes in salivary CgA, AA, DHEA, sIgA, and neuropeptide Y levels in pregnant women with gingivitis (p>0.05); however, a decrease in beta-endorphin levels was observed after therapy (p<0.05). Pregnant women with gingivitis had higher gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) beta-endorphin levels in comparison to non-pregnant women with gingivitis. Conclusions: Gingival inflammation can be a psychosocial stress inducing factor during pregnancy. Furthermore, periodontal therapy may assist in reducing stress-related hormone levels in GCF during pregnancy.
