Öğe Cultural and Personality Predictors of Facebook Intrusion: A Cross-Cultural Study(Frontiers Media Sa, 2016) Blachino, Agata; Przepiorka, Aneto; Benvenuti, Martina; Cannata, Davide; Ciobanu, Adela M.; Şenol-Durak, Emre; Durak, MithatThe increase in the number of users of social networking sites (SNS) has inspired intense efforts to determine intercultural differences between them. The main aim of the study was to investigate the cultural and personal predictors of Facebook intrusion. A total of 2628 Facebook users from eight countries took part in the study. The Facebook Intrusion Questionnaire, the Ten-Item Personality Inventory, and the Singelis Scale were used. We found that two variables related to Country were significantly related to Facebook intrusion: uniqueness (negatively) and low context (positively): of the personality variables, conscientiousness, and emotional stability were negatively related to the dependent variable of Facebook intrusion across different countries, which may indicate the universal pattern of Facebook intrusion. The results of the study will contribute to the international debate on the phenomenon of SNS.Öğe The development and psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the stress appraisal measure(Hogrefe & Huber Publishers, 2013) Durak, Mithat; Şenol-Durak, EmreThis study examines the psychometric properties of the Stress Appraisal Measure (SAM) across three separate and independent samples. A calibration study was conducted with a sample of university students (n = 461), resulting in a 5-factor model based on a parallel analysis and a principal axis factor analysis with direct oblimin rotation. Factor invariance across males and females, convergent validity, and discriminant validity were tested using a second sample of university students (n = 751) and adults (n = 548). The 5-factor model obtained in the calibration study was replicated employing a confirmatory factor analysis of the data from the validation study. Factor invariance across males and females was confirmed. In addition to satisfactory internal consistencies, the correlation of the SAM scales with a conceptually related measure (state anxiety) and a conceptually unrelated measure (social desirability) support the convergent and discriminant validity of the SAM.Öğe Factor structure and psychometric properties of the emotional approach coping scale in Turkish üniversity students and community members(Springer/Plenum Publishers, 2011) Şenol-Durak, Emre; Durak, MithatTo evaluate emotional approach coping, including the dimensions of emotional processing and emotional expression, the Emotional Approach Coping Scale (EACS) is frequently used. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of situational EACS among Turkish participants (n = 557), including university students (n = 283) and community members (n = 274). The results revealed that a two-factor model showed significant goodness of fit for confirmatory factor analysis. Furthermore, multi-group comparisons based on sample groups (university students and community members) and gender groups demonstrated no significant differences between the constrained and unconstrained models. In addition to sufficient reliability of the EACS, the concurrent and discriminant validity of the scale were supported by association of the EACS with state anxiety and social desirability. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.Öğe Factors associated with posttraumatic growth among myocardial infarction patients: Perceived social support, perception of the event and coping(Springer/Plenum Publishers, 2010) Şenol-Durak, Emre; Ayvaşık, H. BelginPosttraumatic Growth (PTG) is accepted as positive transformations that are a product of struggling with significant stressors such as chronic illness. A model, conceptualized by Schaefer and Moos (Posttraumatic growth: Positive changes in the aftermath of crisis, pp 99-126, 1998), suggests a relative contribution of environmental and individual resources, perception of the event (PE) and coping in the development of PTG. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of perceived social support (PSS), PE and coping on PTG. This model was tested in a sample of patients with myocardial infarction (MIP, N = 148) from various hospitals in Turkey. The structural equation analysis of the model revealed that PSS was significantly related to PTG through the effect of coping. While coping was significantly and directly related to PTG, PE was not. The findings are discussed in the context of the theoretical model with suggestions for future research.Öğe Factors associated with posttraumatic growth among the spouses of myocardial infarction patients(2010) Şenol-Durak, Emre; Belgin Ayvaşık, HaliseTo clarify the rationale behind Posttraumatic Growth (PTG), a model by Schaefer and Moos describes the relative contribution of environmental resources, individual resources, event related factors, cognitive processing and coping (CPC) on PTG. In the present study, this model was tested with the spouses of myocardial infarction patients with data from various hospitals in Turkey. A structural equation model revealed that neither individual nor environmental resources had indirect effects on PTG through the effect of event-related factors and CPC, while they showed direct effects on PTG. The findings were discussed in the context of the theoretical model. © 2010 SAGE Publications Los Angeles, London, New Delhi, Singapore and Washington DC.Öğe Factors associated with the symptoms of depression and anxiety among male Turkish prisoners: a life crisis and personal growth model perspective(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2010) Şenol-Durak, Emre; Gençöz, FarukThe factors associated with depression and anxiety disorders in the prison populations have been empirically tested in various studies. The aim of the present study was to examine the factors associated with the symptoms of depression and anxiety in a sample of 179 Turkish male prisoners. For this purpose, a model conceptualized by Schaefer and Moos (1998) was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The role of locus of control (as a personality trait); prison type, crime type, time spent in prison (as situational and crime-related variables); and the effect of prison-life stress on the prisoners' level of depression and anxiety symptoms were tested by using two separate structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses. Results revealed that by playing a mediator role, prison-life stress affected locus of control and situational and crime-related variables and hence, indirectly influenced depression and anxiety symptoms. Examining the role of the situational and personality factors on prisoners will provide a new departure for further studies conducted within prison settings.Öğe Film analizi yöntemi ile Virginia Satir Aile Terapisi yaklaşımına bir bakış(2007) Şenol-Durak, Emre; Fışıloğlu, HürolAile terapisindeki kadın kuramcılardan ilki olan Virginia Satir, farklı problemlerin tedavisinde etkin bir terapi ortaya koymuştur. The aim of the present study was to examine the mediator roles of both life satisfaction and self-esteem between affective components of subjective well-being and cognitions about problematic Internet use. For this purpose, the model that was conceptualized by Davis (Comput Human Behav 17:187-195, 2001), Caplan (Comput Human Behav 18:553-575 2002), and Lent et al. (J Vocat Behav 74:190-198 2009) was modified and used as the theoretical framework for this study. The impacts of life satisfaction and self-esteem on the association between affective components of psychological well-being (positive and negative) and cognitions about problematic Internet use were tested by using structural equation modeling (SEM) in a sample of 480 Turkish university students. The results reveal that by playing a mediator role, self-esteem impacted positive/negative affect and life satisfaction and, hence, indirectly influenced cognitions about problematic Internet use. Examining the roles of self-esteem and subjective well-being will provide a new starting point for further studies.Öğe Posttraumatic growth (PTG) and posttraumatic depreciation (PTD) across ten countries: global validation of the PTG-PTD theoretical model(Elsevier Ltd, 2021) Taku, Kanato; Tedeschi, Richard G.; Shakespeare-Finch, Jane; Krosch, Daniel; David, Georgina; Şenol-Durak, EmreThis study examined the relationships between posttraumatic growth (PTG) and posttraumatic depreciation (PTD) across 10 countries and assessed the factorial invariance of the standardized inventory assessing PTG and PTD, the PTGDI-X, the expansion of the PTGI-X (Tedeschi et al., 2017). We also investigated the roles of social and cognitive factors in PTG and PTD. Data were collected from participants who identified that their most stressful life experience met the definition of trauma in Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Nepal, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Turkey, and the US. The participants completed the PTGDI-X and inventories measuring posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and predictor variables such as reexamination of core beliefs, centrality of the event, rumination, and disclosures. Results identified universal aspects such as equivalence of factor loadings of the PTGDI-X and the impact of positive/negative disclosure on PTG and PTD. Results also revealed culture-specific aspects, including the relationships between PTG and PTD, and different patterns of cognitive predictors for PTG and PTD. The current study offered the insight that, for the first time using international data, positive and negative post-trauma changes are not likely to be on opposing ends of one dimension, and it is essential to use the PTGDI-X to better understand both positive and negative aspects of post-traumatic experiences.Öğe Psychometric properties of the satisfaction with life scale among Turkish üniversity students, correctional officers, and elderly adults(Springer, 2010) Durak, Mithat; Şenol-Durak, Emre; Gençöz, TülinThis study aims to extensively examine the psychometric properties of adapted version of the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) in different Turkish samples. In order to test the psychometric properties of the SWLS three separate and independent samples are utilized in this study, namely university students (n = 547), correctional officers (n = 166), and elderly adults (n = 123). Concerning the reliability of the scale, internal consistency and item-total correlation coefficients are found to be satisfactory for all three samples. As for the validity studies, concurrent validity of the scale is supported in all three samples by revealing the association of SWLS with conceptually related measures, which included depression, self-esteem, positive affect and negative affect, work stress, and monthly income measures. Discriminant validity is examined only in the sample of university students, and SWLS revealed a non-significant correlation with a conceptually unrelated construct (i.e., willingness to self-censor). Consistent with the original scale, a single-factor solution model reveals an adequate fit in all three different samples. Furthermore, confirmatory factor analysis with multi-group comparisons performed demonstrates that SWLS has the same theoretical structure for three different groups on the basis of a single-factor solution model. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.Öğe Psychometric qualities of the UCLA loneliness scale-version 3 as applied in a Turkish culture(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2010) Durak, Mithat; Şenol-Durak, EmreThe University of California, Los Angeles, Loneliness Scale-Version 3 (UCLA LS3) is the most frequently used loneliness assessment tool. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the UCLA LS3 by utilizing two separate and independent samples: Turkish university students (n = 481) and elderly (n = 284). The results demonstrate that the 3-factor model reveals significant results in both samples in terms of goodness of fit indices in confirmatory factor analysis. In addition to satisfactory reliability, the concurrent and discriminant validity of the scale were supported in both samples by revealing the association of the UCLA LS3 with conceptually related measures (i.e., social support, social provision, depression, positive affect, negative affect, and self esteem in the sample of university students; geriatric depression, self esteem and life satisfaction in the sample of elderly) and the unrelated measure (i.e., social desirability). In addition to examining the psychometric properties of the UCLA LS3, the present study adds to the present literature about loneliness, shedding light on a non-western culture.Öğe Stress related growth among diabetic outpatients : role of social support, self-esteem, and cognitive processing(Springer, 2014) Şenol-Durak, EmreDiabetic patients feel stress regarding the nature of the illness. This study aims to explore factors related to stress related growth (SRG) among diabetic outpatients. A newly proposed model, based on the Schaefer and Moos' Life Crises and Personal Growth Model was tested in a sample of diabetic outpatients. The sample was 455 diabetic outpatients who were not hospitalized previously. Results revealed that cognitive processing (CP) mediated the relationship between self-esteem and SRG. Moreover, the effect of social support on SRG was significant. As the results of the multi-group comparisons indicated, the proposed model was valid for diabetic patients with or without additional diseases. Regarding clinical implications, clinicians should evaluate CP and family support that are highly correlated with SRG.Öğe Testing the psychometric properties of the ways of coping questionnaire (WCQ) in Turkish üniversity students and community samples(Wiley, 2011) Şenol-Durak, Emre; Durak, Mithat; Elagöz, Feride ÖzlemWays of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ) has been extensively used to assess coping styles in the clinical or non-clinical context. The present study investigates the psychometric properties of WCQ in Turkish culture and attempts to get its shorter version by using three separate and independent samples (two groups of university students and one community sample). The constructive study was conducted with a sample of full-time university students (N = 472) and it indicated that the most relevant factor structure was seven-factor model. The factors were planful problem-solving, seeking refuge in supernatural forces, keep to self, seeking social support, seeking refuge in fate, escape/avoidance and accepting responsibility. After that, confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test the adequacy of these factors with two different samples. Study 1 was conducted with a sample of university students (N = 485) and Study 2 was conducted with a sample of community (N = 416). Results demonstrated that seven-factor solution revealed better results in both samples in terms of goodness of fit indexes in confirmatory factor analysis. The results of reliability and validity analysis revealed that psychometric properties of WCQ were acceptable. In addition to getting shorter version of WCQ, the present study enhances cross-cultural information that increases awareness about the coping styles in a non-western culture. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.Öğe Turkish validation of the emotional approach coping scale(Sage Publications Inc, 2011) Durak, Mithat; Şenol-Durak, EmreThe Emotional Approach Coping Scale is frequently used to assess coping, which consists of emotional processing and emotional expression. The present aim was to examine the psychometric properties of this scale by utilizing two independent samples: university students (n=481) and community members (n=284). Based on goodness-of-fit indices in confirmatory factor analysis, a two-factor model yielded significant findings in these samples. The results of multi-group analysis revealed that the theoretical structure of the dispositional Emotional Approach Coping Scale was the same for men and women. In addition to sufficient internal consistency and test-retest reliability, the relationships between the Emotional Approach Coping Scale and five conceptually related measures (coping styles, positive affect, negative affect, depression, and trait anxiety) demonstrated concurrent validity. Furthermore, the present study provides a map of emotional approach coping styles in a non-Western culture.Öğe Which personality traits are associated with cognitions related to problematic Internet use?(Wiley, 2014) Durak, Mithat; Şenol-Durak, EmreThe effects of the Big Five personality traits on cognitions regarding problematic Internet use (PIU) have not been studied. The present paper aims to evaluate the effects of personality traits on cognitions regarding PIU that are classified as loneliness/depression, diminished impulse control, distraction and social control. Additionally, the mediator effect of the Big Five personality traits on the relationship between time spent online and cognitions regarding PIU was tested in a sample of 494 Turkish university students. Hierarchical regression analysis results reveal that controlling the effects of socio-demographic variables and time spent online, higher neuroticism and lower conscientiousness were related to cognitions regarding PIU. Moreover, results of structural equation modelling indicate that the relationship between time spent online and cognitions regarding PIU was independently mediated by extraversion, openness and agreeableness. Examining the role of all of the Big Five personality traits (especially neuroticism and conscientiousness) on PIU will increase understanding in further studies.
